NOT ANSWERED (thread closed in error)

When my Grandfather Arthur Jack White re-married in 1921 he is listed as 'Widower' on the marriage certificate. He is listed as single and living in Ilford on the 1911 Census and his army records that I hold tell me he was married and living in Cheriton, Kent in 1920. With such a common name there are many possible marriages during that period and of course he may have lived at another location.

There is also a family story that his first wife died whilst giving birth to a girl who he gave away or had adopted. She didn't find out who her Father was until her wedding day.

With so little information, has anyone any tips or suggestions on how to proceed?

Do the Army records you have, give any further information - they would normally give name and address of NOK.

Any actual DOB or any address

Russell

Russell Report 15 Mar 2021 23:20

Thanks everyone for looking all the information up, but to clarify, I had already found that. 'Partrington' should read 'Parkington'.

The army records I have do not give any next of kin, but do provide the address in Cheriton as 35 Military Avenue and his employment as a Butcher in 1920.

greyghost Report 15 Mar 2021 23:42

Partrington / Parkington is as on the record from freebmd transcript - but allowing for mistakes shows the correct marriage of the parents and children births.

We are trying to help you. With very little to go on we will probably post information you have, but we don't - it's an attempt to help by possibly working backwards or sideways.

Who did he marry in 1921 and where, may help to narrow down possibilities for a first marriage.

When did he join the Army, where did he serve, what was his Service no. - was he a Butcher in the Army or was that to be his address and occupation when demobbed

Well if he was still married in1920 and living cheriton then a death of the wife must be 1920/21

When in 1921 did he re-marry?

Is THIS the record?

Marriages Jun 1921 (>99%)
Garwood Agnes White Willesden 3a 632
Gooding Agnes White Willesden 3a 632 to view
White Arthur J Garwood Willesden 3a 632
White Arthur J Gooding Willesden 3a 632

Had hoped it would be later, so the 1921 census would have been of possible use. As the census wasn't taken until 19th June, that's probably ruled out that line of enquiry

To give you all the information I have:

I have already requested two marriage certificates-one to Esther Cray and the other to Esther Drane and neither of those related to him.

His exact date of birth was 18th January 1897 (birth certificate & 1939 Register)

His second marriage was to my Grandmother, Agnes Albina Garwood on 13th June 1921 and this took place at Willesden (London) Register Office. This was her second marriage and her maiden name was Gooding. (I have the marriage certificate).

It seems strange that one of his army papers dated 1920 states he was married, and yet he marries again so soon after in the following year.

This is the information gleaned form the original army documents I have:

Certificates of Discharge state he was attested into the Army Service Corps on 2nd November 1914 specialising as a machine gunner. He was discharged on the 16th February 1919, but on 17th February 1919 re-enlisted into the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) for 4 years. The enlistment took place at Risal Dur. This was a 'special re-enlistment' until 31st March 1923, and the Attestation (dated 23rd April 1920) states he is a Butcher, married, and living at 35 Military Avenue, Cheriton, Kent. His service number was 163877.

However he was discharged on 4th August 1920, on medical grounds due to having a Hernia. He had served one year, 169 days. The form states he was married and living at 103 Willesden Lane, Kilburn.

Why have you 'marked as answered'? Your query doesn't appear to be resolved
Have you decided you need no further assistance?

Russell

Russell Report 16 Mar 2021 11:22

Sorry ErikaH, was just about to post something about this.

The instructions are rather lacking and I assumed that I needed to tick 'answered question' on each response so the person knew I had replied to their comments.

Can't seem to reopen the whole closed thread and I expect I will have to send an email via the help section which could take a couple of days to get a response.

So it is certainly not closed!

Unfortunately it's not possible to reverse "Mark as answered".
Many new users fall into that trap.
This has been a problem for many years.

(I don't know if the "support" people can reverse it.)

However, you can edit the title of your thread to add "Not answered" or similar.
