The newspaper article also says that after Switzerland, he was in Bombay and London, before going to Canada. He certainly got around in a very short space of time, if all that is true!

There is no reference to his time in Birmingham…………….

I have sent Susan a PM informing her of the newspaper clipping information and provided her with the contact information for Archives Canada.

AG- Great find.

Just for info

https://library-archives.canada.ca/eng/collection/research-help/genealogy-family-history/employment/Pages/nwmp-rcmp.aspx

In 1873, the federal government created the North-West Mounted Police to assert and enforce Canadian sovereignty. Their jurisdiction was in the North-West Territories (present-day Alberta and Saskatchewan).
Its jurisdiction expanded in:
1895 to include Yukon
1903 to include the Arctic coast
1912 to include northern Manitoba

So this in turn would reduce the number of Provices to those listed above as potential locations for attestation purposes.

Incidentally, Jink, the losses of WW1 records are actually stated to be 60-65%……not 40%

Odd that Susan didn’t mention that………….

She is allegedly aware of ALL his history other than his time in Canada.

Fantastic find, BTW

Unlikely, one would think, that he was ever a motor mechanic as per the 2014 thread :-S :-S

Ah here we go, a bit more about him. From the Grimsby Evening Telegraph 10 Feb 1939.

'SERVED IN THE MOUNTIES

Mr J H Macdonald, manager of the new Darley's Hotel, could, one imagines, many a tale unfold.
Born in the West Highlands - and having, in consequence, a far less pronounced Scots accent than the Glaswegians and other Lowlanders that come South - Mr Macdonald's first experience of the hotel business was in Nice. He afterwards worked in Switzerland, Bombay and London before finding his way into the Canadian North - West Mounted Police, and thence, during the war, into the army, where he saw service in France with the Canadians.

EDITED to include Bombay and London, thanks ErikaH, don't know how I missed that out

In that case, someone has a mammoth task ahead as there are almost 1600 listings for service medals for John Macdonald on FMP ;-) ;-) ;-)

British War Medal (1914-1920)

This silver medal was awarded to officers and men of the British and Imperial Forces who either entered a theatre of war (an area of active fighting) or served overseas (perhaps as a garrison soldier) between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918 inclusive.

I don't think he’d be awarded British medals for service in a Canadian force.

If he stayed in Britain surely they're would be a medal card........hang on a minute......

That was always the most likely scenario

From apparently factual info on the other thread, it appears that many British soldiers were recruited to the 2nd Canadian Contingent - so John may never have been in Canada at all.

In 1939 the hotel name ends in ". . .leys".
