Find Ancestors

I have traced George Thorneycroft back to 1891
And am having difficulty finding him earlier. He married Ann Bloor in 1880 at Burslem. His father is said to be William. His son George’s birth is registered there in 1881. However I cannot find this family earlier than 1891 as below, nor a William Thorneycroft living around Tunstall in 1861( father George’s admitted birth date.
Any suggestions please ?

Thank you. I couldn’t find George with parents either, although it seems his children’s baptisms are Wesleyan Methodist, it doesn’t explain missing census.
With your valued help I might be able to piece together by skipping a generation.

Have you tried looking for a birth registration?

The GRO includes MMN pre-1911, unlike freebmd

There were only two George Thorneycroft births registered in the right district in 1860 +/-2.

This is the child with parents Edward and Harriet:

The only other one in all Staffordshire is this:

but his parents were Thomas and Mary Ann

That’s the brick wall I’ve hit too also using Gro site :-(

Of course his parents may not have registered him in 1860, but my thinking is, even if George is away somewhere in 1881, he married in burslem, and his son registered there in 1881, should not his wife Ann/ie not be found on census? Perhaps they were missed ??

Although this doesn’t solve the Ann problem,but could George have been on a night shift and therefore wouldn’t appear on a census.

Perhaps he wasn’t named Thorneycroft at birth?

Was his father’s occupation recorded on the marriage cert?

Did the father witness the marriage?

Yes sight of the wedding cert is best move. ??
