Am having difficulty tracking down the above Willington George Richard Grigson b 1863 Hackney area, known as George

I have him in 1871 with father Adolphus Grigson and family in Stanley Road, Finsbury, London.

He joined army - 97th Foot Soldiers in 1877 but not sure when he got discharged

Marries Sarah GArdner in St Pancras area in 1891

He reappears in 1901 census as a Hospital Nurse at Royal Victoria Hospital, South Stoneham, , , whilst wife Sarah is in Geldstone Road, Hackney.

Cannot find either of then 1881 or 1891 (I presume Army duties) nor 1911 census onwards.

Although born with first name Willington, usually goes by George !!

No known children that I can find, too.

I have tried Ancestry, GRO & FreeBMD.

The Royal Victoria was a military mental hospital. So presumably he was still in the army ( medical corps?)

His birth registration records his first name as WELLINGTON

Wellington R Grigson born 1903 was the son of Frank and Rosina………just to save anyone following that one. ;-) ;-)

ErikaH, that Wellington is the nephew of the one I'm looking for!! Son of Frank, another son of Adolphus.

Thanks nameless one, I didn't know it was a military mental hospital.

He just disappears after this ...

Wellington , 97th Foot, aged 14 can not be Wellington 4221 Devonshire Regt

4221 on Attestation states NOK Father THOMAS Grigson. He also states he never served with HM Forces previously

Could this be 97th Foot Wellington ??

All very confusing - but this man (formerly Devonshire Regt) is Sarah's husband.

But then there's a confusing page which says he was in Malta in September 1901, and hospitalised with gonorrhoea in 1902.
Also what looks like two ship names in 1904.
Unless they've mixed up two men's records - he was in India in the 1880s, and in hospital several times with syphilis and gonorrhoea.

ADDED:
A final page says that in 1902 (?) he extended his service for 2 years.


When he originally joined up in 1883, at the age of 19 years 4 months, he gave his birthplace as Edmonton, Middlesex, and he was a baker.
Fresh complexion, hazel eyes, black hair.

What's his father's name on that?


Grasping at straws - maybe Adolphus was known as Thomas within the family??

The named ships are probably the ones he travelled to and from in when serving overseas.

Looking at the 1877 record of attestation for 97th Regt -

on the second page it says he (or his enlistment) became "non-effective" on 27 Sept 1877, in Kinsale, the reason being "Given up".

If he was only in the army for 5 months, as a boy, he probably didn't consider that as previous service when joining in 1883.

ADDED:
in an "observations" column at the end it says 1/22nd Regt.
Don't know the significance of that.
"Given up" to a different regiment, rather than "given up" on the army ???
