On the 1939 Register there is a date added of 17/3/1882 with the letters NVQ under the names of Ernest and Emma. Any idea what this means please?

The date looks like a suggested change to Emma's DOB - 17th instead of 3rd March - but her baptism record says March 3rd.

I have her birth certificate which also reads 3rd March. I keep coming back to the birth in Stretford that I posted earlier for an Ernest William Walton on the 19th March. However 1921 census states born Glazebury and the marriage cert gives deceased father as Edward whereas the Stretford father is Joseph. Occupations are also different. Very frustrating!! I have messaged people with Ernests wife on their tree so guess will have to wait and hope!

His birth on LancsBMD shows MMN Walton, which may well be indicative of illegitimacy
Check by looking at the GRO website

Alfred Winstanley married Annie Walton in 1889 in Leigh district
They are on 1901 census where there is a daughter Margaret. Her birth on LancsBMD shows MMN Walton, so William was definitely born out of wedlock, and his father was dreamed up for respectability

Posting 1901 for our reference; William has middle initial W, presumably standing for Walton. I wonder when/why he added the name Ernest.
