Check for his mother’s surname on freebmd or the GRO. Then look for a possible marriage.

Added: from freebmd - mothers mmn was Messenger.

Unfortunably there are two possible Wilson/Messenger marriages in Cockermouth

How do you know his father was a farmer?

He didn’t marry until 1943, so where was he in 1939?

Get his birth certificate - if you are 100% certain that he was born in 1918

There is one of the name and age on 1921 in Workington.

Father David, mother Sarah, but David was a Coal Miner

In 1921, David is in Workington, with wife Sarah, Mary Jane 1916, and William 1918.

If William was already in the services he would not appear on the 1939 register.

‘Just what his grandson thought’ - I expect many of us have found those family stories to be wrong ;-)
