1861 census, transcribed as James Clark, nephew, 3, born Signett, Oxfordshire. I am querying both his surname and the birthplace. Any - and all - ideas welcome. Thank you. Reg

Hi Reg I'd say it looks more like James Monk. not sure about where born though

I'll second that.. would say definately MONK but the place is goodness knows what!.. Jennifer

Thank you all I thought 'Monk' for the surname, but deliberately didn't say so, as I didn't want to influence your opinions. And the place name is a new one on me........so that's something I've learned today. Thanks again Reg

I think the birthplace is Signet. The enumerator has used a double T at the end but the placename is spelt with one. It is just south of Burford. Kath. x
