I cant see any real problems here - a whitesmith would be loosely speaking an engineer of sorts - making things from tin - and many a man upgrades his job on the marriage cert.

I am researching my Great Grandfather's brother, Samuel James Hurt born in 1847 in St Pancras, Middlesex. I have him on the 1851-1871 census, but after that things go a bit 'grey'. I've just got a marriage certificate in 1873 for Samuel James Hurt and Minnie Church in Uxbridge, but it says that both his father and him were 'Engineers'. I know that they were both 'Whitesmiths', and I think I have found Samuel on the 1881 under the name 'Hart'. Also the certificate says his father was Samuel James Hurt, and he did not have a middle name, but his sister's marriage certificate states the father's name as 'James Hurt' so maybe he adopted the name James? Any thoughts would be great. Many Thanks, Susan
