Hi Dan, if you can get that information, especially florances occupation it might help with locating them in the census. I have found a Jeremiah in the 1881 census, right age and place of birth but wrong parents, his parents are John and Ellen McCarthy.

Ok just had another look at my notes from my cousin and I have that there may have also been a son Florance McCarthy born about 1897 and sister Catherine born about 1895. I havent been able to verify this though. I have already taken up enough of your time though and thank you for all your interest in this. Danielle

Argh!! More of them. I cant get over how many men were called Florence, I would have thought one was enough! I dont think I will know for sure which of these families is mine until I get Florance's fathers name. Cant thank you enough though!

Hiya, yeah there does seem to be alot of Florance McCarthy's and looking at it also alot of Jeremiahs. Possibly all related somehow or another. If you can get Florance's fathers name and occupation, that would help us find florance in an earlier census nad therefore give us an idea of his age and place of birth.

I know you said Mary Ann was with her grandparents in 1891, but it could just be that the parents gave her as well, as I have had this happen in some census's where a child turns up at two place in the census. will see if i can locate them in the 1881 now. Got them now in 1901 Florance McCarthy age 46 Bricklayers Labourer born Woolwich Catherine McCarthy age 41 born City Road, London Jerry (most likely Jeremiah) age 21 (cant work out occupation) looks like lift man born Holborn Kate McCarthy age 16 Ticket Writer born Woolwich Florance McCarthy age 14 Van Boy born Woolwich Mike McCarthy age 7 born Holborn Ella McCarthy age 4 born Holborn address 16 Southfield Buildings, Finsbury Still trying to find them in 1881, it took a bit of variation searching to find them in 1891 and 1901

hmmm no luck finding them in 1881, I have however found a Florance McCarthy of similar age Married but on his own as a Patient at cleveland Street Asylum. Occupation a general labourer. Everything matches up except his place of birth which is given as Ireland. Will see if I can find Catherine on her own, which will rule out if this is him or not.

here he is in 1871, the enumerator has put him as daughter. FANTASTIC! Yes that is definetly them. In the 1891 it is Jeremiah that is with his grandparents so that fits perfectly as does the 1901 where Mary Ann is with her Aunt and Uncle. Thank you SO much. Danielle
