Ok Have found marriage for Hugh Handyside and Margaret Baird 30/8/1792 in parish of KILSYTH. What will the record tell me? Thanks

The Handy Report 26 Nov 2006 13:08

Thanks Gillian Had seen Mhairi's thread but its for records after 1855, not the old parish records. I've managed to find the births of 9 of their children! Just want to trace their parents now, (Hugh & Margaret) Sara

Katherine Report 26 Nov 2006 16:55

Hi It is the Kilsyth old Parish Register that you want to look at for both the marriage and the births. This is held in Edinburgh. You might be lucky and get the father's occupation and the address of the family. You might even get witnesses to the wedding, it just depends on how much information was written down....all the Registers are different Kay

The Handy Report 26 Nov 2006 17:16

Katherine I knew the names of siblings from details in a will, so I've checked on Scotlands people dates of birth and verification of who parents were. It's the parents marriage details I'm after and yes it states Kilsyth parish, which as all children born in Edinburgh, assume this is too. If I can find out names of their parents (other info would be a great bonus!) then I can go further back with my tree...

KIlsyth is 12 miles NE of Glasgow. Denis

As its already been said, all the Old Parish Records are different. I've seen some that include a fathers name and occupation, others that give witnesses or 'cautioners' while others give nothing at all. Have you looked for thier deaths? If after 1855 then you might get parents names. Mhairi

Mhairi Have posted on your thread for look up! Know Margaret died April 1850 because it was month before her son died at their Edinburgh home, I'm pretty sure was 48 India Street (I'll check my records). Don't know when father died though ...

The Handy

The Handy Report 26 Nov 2006 18:07

Checked SP - no deaths after 1855 that match up with age. England a possibility? I'll have a look... Feeling is it was before 1855, so am I right in thinking the marriage record is my only hope of further info?

Mhairi Queen of Scots

Mhairi Queen of Scots Report 26 Nov 2006 18:24

Marriage is your best hope. Have you found them in the 1841 census? Are there any other relatives with them? Sometimes you find a elderly relative and it helps to work out family. I would think Handyside would be a relatively uncommon name so it might be easier to find his line than hers. If the family had a burial site that might help with working out parents but not everyone did or had a stone which may of had inscription on it. There are ways even if it means tracing other families down the years just to rule them out. Though you may never be 100% sure. Mhairi

The Handy Report 26 Nov 2006 18:45

Mhairi Thanks. My line is through William Handyside born 1793 (you can see more about him here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Handyside I hadn't thought about where they could be buried ... I wonder if they possibly have a family burial plot? This history has just amazed me! Never dreamt this is what I'd find when I started looking... From what I can make out from the 1841 census shes living at 59 York Place, age 76, independent means ... doesn't look like Hugh is there ... takes me back to before 1855 death?

Jeanie

Jeanie Report 26 Nov 2006 18:59

If you have her death cert, does it mention who her parents were?

The Handy

The Handy Report 26 Nov 2006 19:06

Don't have her death cert! Know from info on her son and details I've extracted from wills and probate. Thats how I know addresses etc.

Mhairi Queen of Scots

Mhairi Queen of Scots Report 26 Nov 2006 19:08

In the website page it shows that Hugh's brother in law (well William's Uncle) was Charles Baird, son of Nicol Baird. Stronge possiblity that Nicol was also Margaret's father? 'He (Charles Baird) died on 10 December 1843 and is buried in the Smolensk Lutheran Cemetery.' Death records before 1855 are...poor. Mostly you wont even get the death date or name of the person. Mainly its just the payment for the 'mortcloth' or a burial record. Young children are usually 'Child of John Smith' adults are usually 'Widow Smith' or 'Mr/s Smith' there are no real details which are of use to anyone. Mhairi

The Handy

The Handy Report 26 Nov 2006 19:27

Well this is getting confusing! William Handyside born 1793 (son of Hugh Handyside and Margaret Baird) married Sophia Gordon Busch in 1829 at St petersburg, Russia, their son, also William Handyside marries his second cousin Isabella Armit Baird in 1855 in Edinburgh, her parents were Nicol John and Elizabeth Baird of Shersha (?) Make any sense?

Mhairi Queen of Scots Report 26 Nov 2006 19:38

I think you need to get a LARGE sheet of paper and work it all out, who married who and who's related to whom. To make things a little more complicated, or maybe this is just coincidence. The IGI has CHARLES OR GASCOIGNE BAIRD - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 13 JAN 1767 Bothkennar, Stirling, Scotland Son of Nicol Baird and Christian Pringle. The bit on Wikipedia has Charles born 1766 though all the entries on the IGI have been submitted so you'd have to double check them all. Now also on Wikipedia it has 'and in 1786 he accompanied a Carron Company manager, Charles Gascoigne, to Russia' Another relation? or just a coincidence? or am just looking to much into this? Mhairi
