Find Ancestors

Can anyone please help me to find Elizabeth Standgroom born 1817 in Ripon, Yorkshire, and her son John W Standgroom, born 1855 in Middlesex, St Clement Danes on the 1861 census - probably living together maybe in the Strand area. Also I cannot find the same Elizabeth Standgroom on the 1891 census .If anyone can please help with these, I have searched for hours! Many Thanks, Susan

Elizabeth's maiden name was Blake, and I have found her as Elizabeth Blake with John Standgroom (her future husband) on the 1841 census. Hope this helps. Susan

In the 1851 census they are indexed under HANDGROOM - John Elizabeth and Alfred E age 7. For the curious, I put in Elizabeth no surname, year of birth, place of birth and middlesex for place of census, spouses name John. Then worked my way down the results. Diane

Hi Marie, John, Elizabeth's husband died in December 1860, on the 1851 census he was a porter, but on the death certificate he was a savings bank messenger. I have found the Standgroom under 'Handgroom' 'Seandgroom' 'Stanttgroom' 'Standgroon' and 'Stangroove' on the other census, so I really cannot guess what else they may be under on the 1861 census. Many thanks Marie, I'm beginning to think so too, although Elizabeth's husband died in December 1860 in the Strand, St Clement Danes, so surely Elizabeth and her son, John W must still be in this area in 1861? Is it possible to search the area instead of the people, or is this too long winded? Thanks again, Susan

Do you have an address on the 1860 death certificate for John? Address searches for 1861 can be done on 1837online - now called findmypast - but you need units to view the results. Augustus Pocock on the 1871 census is at the same address on 1861 census. 1861 RG09/179/31/21 Augustus Pocock age 62 15 Water St, St Clement Danes, Westminster Reg. District: Strand

The address on John's death certificate is:- 223 (and a half!) Strand. Hope this helps, Susan
