Forbes is very much a Scottish forename............It could also, of course, be indicative of the mother's maiden surname..........equally Scottish! Reg Reg

Thanks all, had to go out tonight, will look into those possibilities, Judith, I think that is Caroline on the 1891, and yes Reg the thought that Robert Snr may be Scottish had occured to me as well, but not sure about the Forbes as a middle name, but suppose it must be as son John and my grandmother were just plain Brown! I have today received the marriage certificate for the marriage found by Christine above, Robert Stewart Forbes Brown to Elizabeth Wilkins, 12th Feb 1890, Winchester Register Office. Robert aged 26, Bachelor,Telegraphist, father Robert Stewart Forbes Brown. Elizabeth aged 24, spinster, father John Wilkins deceased. Both parties resident at 2 Andover Road Winchester! The occupation of my greatgrandfather John James father Robert was late bandmaster, Roberts father Roberts occupation is Sea Captain. This marriage is obviously not Johns father re-marrying, but possibly his brother marrying. Now if this is correct, this may explain why neither Robert can be found on the Census, possibly away at sea. More research needed, cannot find the birth of John James (1873) or Robert Stewart jnr (1865), maybe they were registered abroad? Also cannot find the death of Robert Stewart Snr between 1890 & 1899 when he was deceased at the time of Johns wedding. Have also found birth and death in 1891 of who I assume is the son of Robert and Elizabeth, guess who? Robert Stewart Forbes Brown! 'Pulling hair out' Keith

I think I may just send for that marriage certificate, being such an unusual full name I suspect it has got to be him, and hope his occupation is bandmaster!

It's not just you Keith. I can't see either of them on 1901 or 1891. I've tried just looking for a Charlotte Brown/Elizabeth Brown - in Winchester area, 1891 - nichts, nada, nothing!

I don't think it's the right family - found them on 1891, father Robert is a labourer, in North of England, no sign of John James with him.
