Lorraine Report 9 Aug 2006 22:25

I have been trying to reasearch my mothers family and am coming up against brick walls. My grandfather was called James Deadman born 13 july 1913 basingstoke. I got his birth certificate and it tells me his parents were james deadman and laura deadman nee marshall i have searched the census and have mangaed to find james listed as a border on the 1901 and 1891 census but can find no trace of him previous to that. I ordered james and laura's marriage certificate dec 1907 for more clues it lists james father as william deadman corperal in the grenadier guards deceased and laura's father as william marshall also deceased but no proffession. I have looked on the census for these two to see if i can find the names of james or laura's mother and siblings but have no luck. I don't know where to go next! If any body can help i would appreciate it! Thank you lorraine

On the marriage cert, how old were the bride and groom? Who were the witnesses? Any addresses given? A location of some sort is essential for searching............ Reg

That's blown that, then............hoped they'd be relations of some sort!! Laura's father being 'deceased', and no occupation listed may mean that she didn't know him.............'deceased' is sometimes a face-saver for illegitimacy. Reg

This birth fits the 1891 census for James Deadman. Mattingley is in Hartley Witney registration district. Name: James Deadman Year of Registration: 1874 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Hartley Wintney County: Hampshire Volume: 2c Page: 165 Not sure about spending £7 on this certificate as does not fit with age on marriage cert. But as everyone else will tell you the ages on marriage certs are not always right. Maureen

Hi Maureen, Thank you, for the info. It is very frustrating not knowing if this is the right James Deadman. And not being able to find him on the 1881 census! I did my fathers tree and went back quite away and am know in touch with two distance cousins. It would be great to do the same for my mothers side of the family she would be really pleased, but i seem to be getting nowhere. My grandmother is still alive but does not know anything of my grandfathers side. She thinks he had a brother called norman and a sister called grace. but she does get confused. My grandfather was also called James Deadman born 13th July 1913. He married my grandmother and lived and died in wales. He is the only member of the family we know bmd details for. thank you lorraine

1881 my only suggestion Name: James Deedman Age: 5 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1876 Relation: Son Father's name: David Mother's name: Harriet Gender: Male Where Born: Ash, Surrey, England Civil parish: Ash and Normandy County/Island: Surrey Country: England Occupation: Scholar Registration district: Farnham Sub registration district: Frimley ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age David Deedman 44 David Deedman 8 Ellen Deedman 1 Esther Deedman 12 George Deedman 21 Harriet Deedman 45 James Deedman 5 Joseph Deedman 10 Robert Deedman 15 Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 783; Folio: 26; Page: 46; Line: ; GSU roll: 1341184. Not sure now if the 1891 James matches with this one - living in the same area. Father is wrong and not a soldier. My grandmothers half sister put her father as Herbert on her 3 marriage certificates but his name is Harold on her birth cert. Maureen
