Am trying to trace Elizabeth Edkins on 1891 census. I think I have got her on the 1881 but can't be sure as there is no year of birth for her or any age. I would have expected her to be 1 or nearly 1. This is what I have: William Edkins b 1836 Head Emma Edkins b 1836 wife Thomas Edkins b. 1856 Son Mary A Edkins b 1856 dau in law Annie Edkins b. 1863 Dau Emily Edkins b. 1869 Dau Lucy Edkins b. 1871 Dau Frederick Edkins b. 1875 Son George Edkins b. 1879 Son ELIZABETH Edkins b. ??????? Sorry Jess - was so hot and bothered and head thumping that I switched off computer and went to bed to try and sleep !!! It is now next morning. It is a complicated story but I'll try..... here goes I am trying to trace back from Elizabeth Edkins born 1880. As I couldn't find her birth anywhere I thought I would track her via the census knowing that her mother was Mary A but had no fathers name. I couldn't find her on 1891 but tracked her on 1901. Imagine my shock when I find both her and her Mother Mary A. living at the same place and both married to men some 20+ years older than them - the household was a mixture of children, stepchildren etc. which didn't help at all because Elizabeth's natural father wasn't amongst them. I can only assume he had died and Mary A. remarried. I eventually came upon the census list that I first put up which showed a Mary A. Edkins as dau in law to the Edkins family and showing a Thomas as head.but which irritatingly didn't show Elizabeth's year of birth. With a dau in law named as Mary A and g/dau Elizabeth it seemed to fit and gave me Thomas as Mary A's husband and Emma and Wm as Eliz grandparents. It all seemed to fit BUT I was only guessing and in tracing f. trees this is fatal. I am sorry with the delay in replying to your wonderful efforts, but I felt awful with the heat last night and abandoned the computer. Many thanks

so, just trying to understand - where is the 1901 that revealled all this, i'm not quite sure what you mean. i think Elizabeth is illigit ( sorry) although do-dah from next door , that her mother subsequently married , maybe her dad.

hiya, right then, what we really need is a birth for elizabeth, that way we can use mothers name as ref check, and hopefully get right family, as you can see, there does seem to be alot of edkins, i think this is the best way now to go forward. Julie Name: Elizabeth Edkins Year of Registration: 1880 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Warwick County: Warwickshire Volume: 6d Page: 573 This would tie in with elizabeth being 7months old on 1881 census, Julie seems to be only one in warks, in 1880 This could be her marriage, in 1900 View Record Arthur Ernest Badger 1900 Jan-Feb-Mar Birmingham (1837-1924) Warwickshire View Record Elizabeth Eakins 1900 Jan-Feb-Mar Birmingham (1837-1924) Warwickshire >>> Elizabeth Edkins 1900 Jan-Feb-Mar Birmingham (1837-1924) Warwickshire View Record Emil Ludwig Loeser 1900 Jan-Feb-Mar Birmingham (1837-1924) Warwickshire and the ref:: Name: Elizabeth Edkins Year of Registration: 1900 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Birmingham (1837-1924) County: Warwickshire Volume: 6d Page: 128 (click to see others on page) julie

it was Mary im confused about - the one that later marries the bloke from next door . was she really a daughter in law, or a daughter ( in terms of the law)? was she married to one of the Edkins sons (which one?) pre elizabeths birth or not??

hiya Jess, i know what you mean, but we can only assume really, until there is some def proof we are merely guessing LOL Julie

Sorry folks, seem to have made a right pigs ear of this. I'll try and explain from the beginning. Initially I had Charles Bromwich b. 1852 who married second wife Elizabeth Edkins in 1898, Warwick dist. I needed to go back on the Edkins line and so started searching for Elizabeth Edkins on census returns in Warwickshire in the hope of establishing her parents.. I guessed at her year of birth being between 1875-1880. With this in mind I checked the nearest census 1881 and found the list I originally put up, but with no year of birth shown I was no further forward which is why I wanted to try and find her on 1891 census whilst she was presumably still unmarried but I wasn't successful. I then turned my attention to 1901 census, although by this time I knew she was married, but clung to the hope that perhaps she and new husband maybe lived with her parents. This is when I found: Charles Bromage b 1851 Son in Law, Elizabeth b 1880 Dau in Law, Elizabeth F.M. 1900 g/dau, William R. Branson b. 1833 Head, Mary A. 1856 Wife, Albert b. 1879 Son and Fredk b. 1889 Son. I couldn't work out how Charles and Elizabeth were son and dau in law to William and Mary until it dawned on me that Mary and Elizabeth were actually mother and daughter - both having men some 20-odd years older than themselves !! I then checked back on the 1881 census where I had found Elizabeth as grand-daughter with no birth date and Mary A. Edkins with birth date of 1856 and they tallied. From this I am thinking that Mary A. Edkins parents were William and Emma and her first husband was Thomas Edkins b. 1856. I am not presuming this to be correct as yet, but it all does fit in. Hope I have made this clearer for you all, and I apologise for wracking your brains so much, but until I establish that Mary A. Edkins and Thomas Edkins were Elizabeth Edkins parents, I cannot proceed on the Edkins line. If indeed they are, then I have struck gold as Thomas' parents are obviously William and Emma. Thanks you all for sticking with this and doing your best to help me out. Gee this hot weather isn't good for the brain is it ?
