Wow I don't know how to thank you all.....it is amazing what a fresh pair of eyes can see..... I have ordered two of the childrens Birth Certificates and they will arrive on July1st from GRO.... Fishing as an occupation seems to run through my fathers side of the family and now it looks like my mothers side....although originating in Grimsby, it isn't too much of a shock....I was just concerned when John didn't appear on the later census' and the spelling Playl I must remember without the E on the end....

Ellen is 'married' in both 1891 and 1901. If her husband is the fisherman I found lodging in Grimsby in 1881, he was probably away at sea on the census nights. The marriage cert will give you the name and occupation of John's father, to enable you to trace him in earlier censuses. Reg

Mags & Nicky

Mags & Nicky Report 21 Jun 2006 11:43

Interestingly on the 1891, there is a Polly Fuller (no jokes!) living next door but one to Ellen, with her sister Sarah A Darwood who is also listed as HEAD and married. My guess is both husbands are out fishing together!

Mags & Nicky

Mags & Nicky Report 21 Jun 2006 11:35

Odd that he isn't with them in 1891, and Ellen is down as HEAD, but then there is another child in 1900. Hmmm.! I've checked the image for 1891 and she is down as married so I guess he must be off fishing somewhere. The name Playle appears to come from Essex so I would imagine he heralds from there, and was just living in Grimsby when he met Ellen. The only way you can now be sure is to get one of the children's birth certificates. I think Reggie has found the right man in 1881 but you need to be certain before you can claim him! Mags. x
