Looking for my granfathers birth details I came across three Charles Thompson's who were all born in the same year (1889) Newcastle. The year is correct. He married my gran Hannah Murry Fitzgerald in 1910. They lived on Scotswood Road Newcastle. On the Marraige cert. it states his father is called Jack Thompson and he is deceased. I never knew my grandfather as he died in 1916 in France. He was also served in India and re-enlisted in the 1914-18 War. ' Northumberland Fusiliers'. He was only 26 when he died and my gran was pregnant with her third child Charlotte, my mother. I know nothing else about him so I thought I would get his birth certificate , however ,which one?. Anyone out there who can help and give me some direction ? Cyndy

Emma Report 20 Jun 2006 19:25

Hi Cyndy I know it's not exactly the information you required but have you seen his entry on the Commonwealth War Graves site? It gives his middle initial as C, is that any help to narrow it down? Emma

Dianne Report 20 Jun 2006 19:26

When you order the certificate, you will need to stipulate that the father must be Jack. Otherwise it will be the wrong cert. If the father is not Jack on the cert you order, they will not send it, then you can try again with one of the other Charles references, until you get the right one. Dianne xx

Pippa

Pippa Report 20 Jun 2006 19:28

But if you use Jack as a reference point and his name is John on the cert then they won't send it and charge you £4.00!

Dianne

Dianne Report 20 Jun 2006 19:32

True Pippa Doll, I never thought of that!! You'll just have to hope that the other Charles dads are called George and Thomas or something, and that there's only one dad called John/Jack. Dianne xx

Dianne

Dianne Report 20 Jun 2006 19:33

I'll tootle off for a bit and see if I can find out all 3 dads names for you from censuses. Back soon. Dianne xx

There's this family in 1901 with Charles and John: J G Lamb abt 1874 Carlisle, Cumberland, England Boarder Elswick Northumberland Chas Thompson abt 1890 Newcastle, Northumberland, England Son Elswick Northumberland Ellen Thompson abt 1857 Durham, England Wife Elswick Northumberland John Thompson abt 1853 Cumberland, England Head Elswick Northumberland M Thompson abt 1885 Newcastle, Northumberland, England Daughter Elswick Northumberland R M Thompson abt 1897 Newcastle, Northumberland, England Daughter Elswick Northumberland S A Thompson abt 1892 Newcastle, Northumberland, England Daughter Elswick Northumberland W Thompson abt 1888 Newcastle, Northumberland, England Son Elswick Northumberland Not very helpful with just initials for most of them .... As Jim mentioned above, here's the family in 1891 (but John seems to have a different wife): Charles Thompson abt 1890 Newcastle Upon Tyne Son Elswick Northumberland View Record Isabella Thompson abt 1855 Ferryhill, Durham, England Wife Elswick Northumberland View Record John Thompson abt 1852 Oughterside, Cumberland, England Head Elswick Northumberland View Record Mary E Thompson abt 1885 Newcastle Upon Tyne Daughter Elswick Northumberland View Record William Thompson abt 1887 Newcastle Upon Tyne Son Elswick Northumberland Emma

I've come up with: Charles William 10b 156 JAS quarter 1889. I think he is the son of George Thompson and Sarah, from 22 Chillingham Road Heaton Newcastle. The other 2 Charles Thompson births I found are Charles Brodrick 10b 155 AMJ quarter 1889 and Charles 10b 72 OND quarter 1889. I have one other family living in Newcastle with a Charles for a son. They are John Thompson and Susanna at 11-13 Hepples Cottages Wallsend. If this is your Charles I think you would need to use Susanna as your checking point rather than John. I can't find the third Charles (Brodrick) on any census in Newcastle area (Northumberland) so the third one may live in Durham. Hope this makes sense. Dianne xx

I had a similar problem a while ago looking for Joseph Thompson - found 3 and didn't know which to choose. Advice from the lovely people on this board was to apply to the LOCAL Register Office and explain what you knew for sure. it worked for me and I received the correct cert. They were great, looked at all three and sent the one I needed - only cost me for one cert not 3.as it would have from Southport. kind regards Barbara

Thank you all for your research and advice and for all the trouble you have taken to help me in my search. I do appreciate all your help, after I requested help for some unknown reason I was unable to read the replies until now ?????
Maybe I did not know where to look???
only four and a half years !
I still am not convinced I have the right parents for my grandfather . I feel that the army could have further info which would point me in the right direction however the army records are also very confusing when it comes to Charles Thompson as they have some records of him enlisting when he was 29 ,as he died age 26 they have got some of the connecting records mixed up.I know that there are quite a few Charles Thompson's who died in the war. according to the war records he was a Sargeant in 1st Batt Northumberland Fusiliers. Thanyou for all your help.

This is probably a red herring. But it's worth keeping it in mind in case of confussion.....
On Ancestry, there is a WW1 pension record for a Charles Thompson, in the Northumberland Fus. with reg.number 13559. Interestingly, this man gives his NoK as his father John (which often becomes Jack).
However, this man seems to be discharged in 1915 (although thanks to Ancestry's wonderful indexing, the promised 18 pages seem only to show 3 before a different person starts).
As I said, this is probably just a red herring, but it may help.
