LOL...Oh dear, poor Susan, I bet you're wishing you never asked now? Sooo much info to take in. Good luck on your research. (Dont worry too much about the Marquis family name, all families have their perculiarities and skeletons!!!) Suzanne

Susan you need to try and access copies of the original parish records to see exactly what the vicar has written regarding the baptism of Geroge. Quite often they would put into the records who the father was thought to be. Failing that try and track down where the bastardy bonds for the area. It is possible that he was bought by the parish to agree to pay for the upkeep of his child to prevent any Costs for the Poor falling to them. As you havethe baptism date it may be worth tracing where is teh local records Office to this area and emailing and asking if they are able to look for you. Zoe

The only other batosim I can see to an Elizabeth and John is this one but it would have made her about 50 when she had George???? Mary Marquiss John/Elizabeth 15 7 1787 but if the death in 1841 is the father George then their ages would match??? burial of George nation: George Nation Crowcombe 7 2 1841 65 Died 30/1

I think I already posted up 'Uncle John''s baptism (1792 parents John and Betty - see page 1). As for 'Aunt Eleanor', her maiden name was Heyett so I don't think she would be Marianne's sister. But there was no sister Mary Ann or Marianne listed for John in those baptisms that I could see, only that daughter Mary that I already posted up. I am just wondering if she could be Marianne? Kate.

Suzanne, you're right people do seem to be interested don't they. Well, the whole lot of Marquisses are interesting right down the line, having affairs, getting married again soon after husband has died, right down to my mum who last week met her half sister that she didn't know anything about until two months ago. Those Marquisses!

Debi Coone Report 7 Jun 2006 13:24

Susan exactly the ame place as you found him .... sorry no new evidence. I wonder if Marianne could have married after George's birth?

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 7 Jun 2006 13:21

Sorry Susan, computer crashed!!!!! Im going on the asumption that both parents have died so I refer to the aunt/uncle from the censuses. If you can find his baptism it will hopefully lead you to the baptism of either George senior or Marianne as well, as presumably one of them is either a brothre or a sister to the uncle in the censuses. Hope you understand. Suzanne Cant help laughing...lol....youve got everyone interested!!!!

Susan Report 7 Jun 2006 13:20

Deborah and Kelley, where did you find this reference to George Nation Marquiss Marianne please?

Kate

Kate Report 7 Jun 2006 13:19

Okay, Elizabeth's baptism: Marquis Elizabeth Marianne Crowcombe Servant 11 1 1835 and George's: Marquiss George Nation Marianne Crowcombe 12 8 1838 bn 25/7/1838 If the birthdate is correct, then he WAS born after the start of civil registration so maybe his birth was registered, maybe not. I will have a look and see if I can find anything. As for the surname, the baptism register would almost certainly only have one column for 'surname', which would mean that Marquis(s) was Marianne's surname. If you can get access to the actual parish register it would be worth looking in case there is any extra information, but it does look as though the transcribers on there have been pretty thorough. Here is a George Nation baptism also from Crowcombe, who may or may not be George's father: Nation George George/Elizabeth Crowcombe Tanner 29 5 1815 Kate.

Hi been lurking about trying to see if I can help............can't but this is the bapt of george Nation Marquiss: Marquiss George Nation Marianne Crowcombe 12 8 1838 bn 25/7/1838

Kate Report 7 Jun 2006 13:11

Oh riiiiiigggghhhht! I was looking at Bicknoller cos it was their birthplace! Silly me! Back in a minute when I have looked at Crowcombe....!!! Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 7 Jun 2006 13:09

Anyway, trying to get brain in gear, this looks like Uncle John in the pre-1812 Bicknoller baptisms: Marquis John John/Betty 26 2 1792 But the only possible I can find for Marianne is this one: Marquess Mary John/Eleanor Village Lab 13 4 1817 which would make George and Elizabeth John's grandchildren rather than nephew and niece. (Not unknown for this kind of mistake to occur on censuses though) Kate.

Susan

Susan Report 7 Jun 2006 13:06

Suzanne, you say 'By trying to find the baptism of the living rellie from the censuses you might be able to find either George senior's or Marianne's true identity as one of their baptisms is surely to be found within a few years of them to the same parents?' which living rellie do you mean please?, Sue

Susan

Susan Report 7 Jun 2006 13:05

Kate, they are under Crowcombe baptism records 1813-1840 towards the bottom.

Kate

Kate Report 7 Jun 2006 13:02

I'm sure I'm being completely thick here, but I can't see George or Elizabeth in the Bicknoller baptisms on http://myweb.tiscali*co*uk/ian.sage/ (replace * with .) selecting 'Crowcombe from Martin Southwood' and then 'Bicknoller baptisms 1813-1860'. Where am I going wrong? Oh, and by the way, those Nations and Marquisses that somebody listed above from the 1841 are not actually in the same household as each other, just to make it clear. George and Elizabeth 'Morquis' are obviously not the children of John and Eleanor as there is a little line separating them from the rest of the Morquis household, so I'm sure you're right about them being niece and nephew. Kate.

Susan

Susan Report 7 Jun 2006 12:49

Kate, of course it is http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ian.sage/index.htm and then on the left find index of somerset PRs online. Scroll down until you find Crowcombe and then baptism, marriages and deaths are in there. Thanks, Sue
