There weren't too many divorces in the 1930's as it was too expensive for ordinary folk, so I would guess that first husband died. OR....and this happened quite a lot......the first couple just separated and either lived together with another partner calling themselves man and wife, or got married bigamously. I've been told this happened quite a lot between the wars. Kath. x

hi kathleen thought divorce might not be right. just checking for deaths for Reginald. Glenys have you any time scale when Ivy married a Lewis??

Marie

Marie Report 27 May 2006 17:58

Glenys do you not think the 3 children found (surname Deans, mothers maiden name Warren) are anything to do with your family??

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 27 May 2006 18:03

I think the birth's are probably right Marie. There may be a lot of Warrens about in the area, but how many of them can have married Deans ???? It would be a coincidence if it was another couple. Kath. x

What are the surnames of Basil and Brenda??

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 27 May 2006 18:16

Here is Basil's birth, so if the parents were married it's before this date:- Basil W. Lewis, mother's maiden name Warren June qtr. 1934, Brighton, 2b, 326 Kath. x

not sure Glenys, if ivy married Reginald first then a Lewis, I'm going along with what Kathleen said and he probable died. the only death i've come across so far for a Reginald Deans is Reginald Deans 1940 Q2 aged 36 Petersfield 2c 390.

you may need to order birth certs to get full fathers name.

If you can't find a marriage of Ivy to Mr. Lewis before the birth of Basil and Brenda, then I would look afterwards, as a lot of people (some in my own family) left husband's or wives, and moved in as man and wife with someone else. Sometimes they had children, registered them as if the parents were married, and then married at a much later date, when the first partner had died, because divorce wasn't an option. Kath. x

Glenys, Just to repeat, the birth certificate in itself won't show that the parents are married. I have birth certificates where it would appear that the mother is married, where she uses the 'husbands' name and 'formerly.....' just like on a certificate where the parents ARE married, but I've then found the marriage a few years afterwards. Only a marriage certificate will tell you if they were ACTUALLY married. Kath. x

George W Lewis - Ivy Warren - Brighton 2b 709 - 1933 Q3

I'd say that she either wasn't married to Reginald Deans (or her marriage to Mr. Lewis would be in the name of Deans) or she left Reginald Deans and just reverted to the name Warren and got married anyway (whether or not Mr. Deans was dead) as divorce was very expensive and difficult to get. UPDATE - sorry, I forgot the marriage to Reginald Deans was found wasn't it? In that case I reckon she just got married again and said she was a spinster (the marriage certificate will tell you what she describes herself as...spinster, widow, divorced). Unless two Ivy Warrens are being mixed up!! Kath. x
