Find Ancestors

Trying to find info on my paternal grandparents (and fore fathers), all generations previous to mine are deceased so info is proving hard to find. My grandfather Mark Tolley was born circa 1905, he married Mary Roberts (b circa 1905), they had three children William, Doris and Kenneth. All born and lived in the Walsall/Tipton/Darlaston/Willenhall area. Any info or tips would be most welcome. Regards Steve P.S. Thanks Elaine :-)

Have you checked for either birth on FreeBMD .... 1905 +/- 5 years ? http://freebmd.rootsweb(.)com ... remove ( & ) I would start looking for the marriage circa 1923 ... and work this way, qtr by qtr, year by year. Once you find the marriage ..... then you can start searching for childrens births ... Elaine ;-)

Relatives who are still living can be very helpful, or they can be a hindrance by telling you 'facts' which aren't true. And once you get past a couple of generations, you don't have anyone to ask anyway. The way to go back is tried, and tested. It involves time and money. You get the birth certs of people you are tracing. This gives you parents' names. you find the marriage of those parents, which gives you their fathers' names and occupations as well as the couples' ages. You can go on doing this until you get to 1901 when you can use the 10-yearly censuses all the way back to 1841. Have a look at the Getting Started section on the homepage - you have to scroll down a way to find it. nell

You would need to send for your grandfather Mark Tolley and Mary Roberts birth certs, this will give you info on their parents then you should be able to find them on the 1901 census and work back from there. Roy

Mark Tolley COULD have been born in Ireland or Scotland then ???? . or further a field maybe ?

I've looked at the birth indexes from 1st qtr of 1903 to last qtr of 1907 and can't find a Mark Tolley birth in these years. Is it possible that Mark was a middle name? Kath. x

Have you got your Fathers birth cert or marriage cert ? This will confirm his Fathers name in full...... The name Mary Roberts is a common / popular one .... so we'll concentrate on Mark for the time being !!! :-) Can you tell us when your DAD was born and his full name please ........... or have you got your Dad's birth cert and this is where you are getting your Grandparents names from ? Wow! all this info is coming mind numbingly fast. I only ever knew him as Being named Mark, he died when I was quite young but I don't remember him having an unusual accent. The Mary Roberts had 3 children William, Doris and Kenneth (b1934) so not the ones pointed out. Steve

Search the BMD's on Ancestry. I believe it's still FREE to search them ? http://www.ancestry(.)co(.)uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx again ... remove the ( ) Click on the Marriage's and search each qtr from 1912 for Mark Tolley, ( as that's the least common name)

The eldest child was William, I have no idea when he was born though. Steve

I've checked Tolley Births from March 1931 - 1934 .... no other accept Kenneth in March 1934. If you search, search backwards from Dec 1930, sept 1930, etc etc. When you find Williams birth, then start a search for the parents marriage around about that year. That's IF they did marry .... Elaine ;-) I've also checked all 1928 .... 1927 .... OK, have found William Tolley b March qtr 1926, Dudley. 6b, 1468 ... MMN: Roberts. I'll start searching for parents marriage 1924/25/26......... Doris must have been born during 1929 or 1930 .. I'll let you find that birth .....

I've searched for the parent smarriage but am having trouble opening some pages PAGES I CAN'T DO ARE: 1925 - all of them 1926 June and Dec 1927 - all of them 1928 - March 1929 - march June December 1930 - March and September will keep trying if Elaine doesn't get a hit on her years also done all of 1931/2/3 with no matches

There is no Tolley marrying a Roberts 1924, 1925 or 1926. No Mark Tolley's or any Tolley. have checked the qtr's that are missing from Ancestry on 1837online. They may have married 1921, 1922 or 1923 ........ or 1927 and onwards........ Checked marriages 1912 - 1920 inclusive already. Wondering if both Mark and Mary are a lot older than you believe ......... Mark could be the one born 1893 maybe .. and it's possible that Mary's MAIDEN name IS Roberts, - but SHE could have been married before Tolley, which means we won't find a marriage between Tolley / Roberts. You need your Dad's birth cert to find if Mary had any other names......... Good Luck Elaine ;-)

Stephen, You mention earlier that Mark died whilst you were young ........... when was that please ???? give us an estimated year of death .... how young were you ... work out how young you were when he died and give me a year ! His date of birth will be on his Death entry .....................

Elaine great minds - I was just searching teh ancestry death indexes for him - nothing between 1984 and 2004 which could be him (although I don't trust that it goes to 2004 anyway) A couple of possible for mary - but need more specifics on where she died Z xx
