Alison - I had another go this morning for the marriage but still no joy. It doesn't help that her place of birth varies according to which census you look at. None of the marriages (which are complete) on the durham gov or newcastle gov sites have a cockburn marrying an oliver. I can't see Jane on 1901, but can on 1891 so presume she died between the two. Her death is possibly Name: Jane Cockburn Birth Date: abt 1820 Year of Registration: 1892 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec Age at death: 72 District: Chester Le Street County: Co. Durham Volume: 10a Page: 292 Jools

Alison - my determination has not been successful so far. I've looked at every John COCKBURN marriage between JFM 1860 and OND 1866 in the north east and as far as I can see not one of them has a corresponding entry for a Jane OLIVER. Very sorry - either I was right in my first suggestion that they didn't marry, or Heather is right that they married a lot later. If nothing else, you have now ruled out 1856 to 1866 for their marriage. Jools

Alison - bear with me please. I'm doing some lateral thinking (dangerous I know lol). that BC you have for James - was he born AMJ 1867 chester le street area or jfm 1868 tynemouth area?? If you aren't sure which area, just post date of birth and I'll work from that.

Jools Report 12 Mar 2006 19:39

Alison - I can't see any marriage for a John Cockburn to a Jane on durhamrecords. I'm wondering if either they didn't marry or the children were born as Oliver not cockburn
