Can anyone unearth any records of the family of Jane Gofton in Filey. She was born around 1815 & married John Killingbeck in 1837. I have them as Killingbecks from then onwards, but nothing about Janes family. I guess baptism records would be useful? Would be really grateful for any help! Thanks

If Georgina has the right family, you'll find George & Elizabeth on the 1851 at ho107/2368 f52 (I think ancestry managed to mistranscribe them as gatton)

Thank you both very much for your replies. Not very experienced at this so I don't know where to go from here. Is there any other way that I can find out if it is the right family, other than ordering Jane's birth certificate, which funds won't allow at the min? Am I right in thinking that that's the only way? All suggestions gratefully received!

Jools Report 12 Mar 2006 10:18

Too early for any certificates - no certs until 1837 (sept I think). Parish records are your ONLY way

Georgina

Georgina Report 12 Mar 2006 10:23

Ann you cant be sure unless you search the parish records but the fact that Jane called 2 of her children George & Elizabeth could be a good sign. Georgina.

Ann

Ann Report 12 Mar 2006 10:24

Good thinking! Looks quite likely then that they are the right ones? Thank you both.

Thanks for everyone's help on Sunday re Jane's family! Does anyone have access to any Filey Parish registers or Marriage records that might prove who Jane's father is by any chance? I think that her marriage record would give her fathers name, which might prove that we have the right family here. Might also have the name of her husband John's father, so I could make some progress there as well. Jane & John married in 1837 -Scarborough dist.- Sept qu. - vol 24 p353.

Thanks Reg! Not too sure on the geography here myself either but will try to have a look on a map to checkout if it's near Selby at all. The Whitby family is definitely the right one, although they later moved back to Filey again Thanks for your help!

Reg - Selby and Carlton juxta Snaith are in the same area. Selby is Selby, Carlton is Goole, so it's a reasonable assumption it's the right guy's entry. Jools

Ann The film of the Parish Registers can be ordered to your nearest LDS Records Centre. If you look on www.familysearch.org you can find out where your nearest one is. You'll need to pop in and order the film, cost £2.70 last time I ordered one I think. They were really helpful when I first went and showed me what I needed to do. The films take a couple of weeks to arrive and the LDS will ring you or write when it gets there. They hold it for a month so you have plenty of time to view it.

Ann you are so lucky that they married late in 1837 when registration first began, you can send for their marriage certificate.... Phase Two! - Assuming that we are now fairly sure that George & Elizabeth are Janes parents, could ayone have a look on the 1841 for them for me? On the 1851 they are transcribed 'Gatton', living in Goftons Yard, Filey & George is a butcher. Would like to see if they were there in '41 as well. Thanks!

Ann

Ann Report 19 Mar 2006 08:34

Could anyone looking up this for me on the 1841, also look to see if G & E's daughter Jane & husband John & their daughter Elizabeth(2) were also living in the same yard? Thank You!

Jools

Jools Report 19 Mar 2006 09:42

Got them in 1841 - give me 5 minutes to do the typing. Jools UPDATE 1841 ho107/1214/2 f32 p20 and all born in county Living Goftons Yard, Filey Geo GOFTON 50 butcher Elizabeth 56 Robert 20 Thomas 15 Rachel 11 Next on schedule (presumably who you are calling Killingbeck) John KILBECK 25 ag lab Jane 20 Elizabeth 2

Ann

Ann Report 19 Mar 2006 09:55

Thanks Jools. I think that makes it even more certain that we have the right Gofton parents for Jane if they are next to each other on the census in Goftons yard. Sure that Kilbeck is just a transcription error. They make it so difficult to find people don't they? I am looking at the 1861 for the family at the mo, & Jane & John seem to be at Church Street but their family, all except Robert, seem to have disappeared. A bit odd as George, their youngest, would only be about 11. Robert I have found as 'Killingbreck' in London, which is right, as all but one of his children were subsequently born in London but I can't find Elizabeth (maybe she married?) Nancy (about 16) or George. Grrrr! It's now become a quest!!
