Birth certs have both parents names, unless child is illegitimate, in which case it generally just has mother. Marriage certs have both bride and grooms' fathers only. For more info about what is on English certs - and what it means - see this invaluable website: http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.htm

No the English marriage certs dont give all the info that Scottish BMD's do, shame I wish they did. Was the birth before 1901? maybe we could help?

A Birth cert should give you the full name of both parents Are you talking before 1901for the birth............If so with the details from the marriage cert you might be able to find them on a census for possible maothers name. Esta

I received an English marriage certicate recently and it didn't have mothers names on it. In Scotland both sets of parets are on the marriage certificate. I will now have to send for an English birth cetificate for this person, will I get any parents names on it, if so will it be both sets of parents??. Betty
