I have just tried to look up my mum Jacqueline Harmer 1942 16th september on 1837 online ordering and cant find her gro number. There is a lady called Beryl Harmer on the same birth date . Would this be my mum. I always thought this was her much older sister. I know that my mum was adopted by her grandma, same surname. I am slightly confused. would anyone know if I should order the adoption certificate or the otherr name at birth. Thanks Suz

Hi, You should always use someone's birth date as a guide as where to start looking for a birth entry. If someone is born in May 2000, then search in the June qtr of 2000 ... but that baby may NOT have been registered until July ... SO, if the registration isn't indexed in June, then look at Sept qtr. Some births weren't registered at all ... other births were registered much later than you expect. Hope this helps. If you know BOTH names, then you could order BOTH certs ... but it depends what info you hope to gain, and what you already know. Elaine ;-) If someone was born in the Jan, Feb or March, then check the March and June qtr's. People born April, May or June - check June or Sept qtrs. People born in July, Aug or Sept months, could be registered in Sept or Dec qtrs. People born Oct, Nov or Dec - check Dec qtr of that year and March qtr of the following year. You have your Mum's birth as 1st or 11th Sept ... in this case, she MAY have been registered straight away, which means she will be in the Sept qtr ... but if she was registered - lets say - 29th Sept, then the chances are that her entry will appear in the Dec qtr.

did grandma officially adopt her, or just bring her up? so really this child WAS Beryls daughter, or you think she was, or someone elses entirely?

I think that Evelyn c1925 the younger sister was the mother. I have looked for Beryl c 1915 harmer and also years as s They llived in southampton Shirley hampshire and then Bournemouth. EVelyn was a young war mum and my gt grandparents brought up the baby as their own. The father was American believe

Susan, Check YOUR birth entry on 1837online ... this will give you your Mum's MAIDEN surname. This is the surname your Mum had at birth. Then you can check for your mum's birth entry under THAT surname. Elaine ;-) For females: Maiden Name= Surname at Birth Married Name= Surname of Husband And your doing FINE using this reply thread peeps x

there is No jacqueline harmer born around then. is Harmer your mothers married name or the one she grew up with?

Susan

Susan Report 16 Jan 2006 10:54

This is what I cant understand. this is the name she grew up with and it is on her marriage certificate. Do you think I should call the gro and let them do a search? The strange thing is Beryl was her 'sisters' name. I think that my gt Grandma christened her this and later changed it
