I thought I had found my grandmothers birth on BMD, I then looked on 1837 to see if there were anymore matches, there wern't, BUT there wasn't the entry that is on BMD either, anybody know why it wouldn't be on 1837, I know my Nans birthdate, so why isn't she on 1837, any ideas please? Thanks Lynda |

Does this mean then that 1837 isn't as complete as we think it is? |

Thats what I'm thinking Deborah, seems odd it's on BMD and not on 1837, never known that before. Lynda |

Hi Lynda, Could you give the details? Merry |

Kate | Report | 28 Dec 2005 19:09 |
Can you give us the details please? It could be one of those 'mis-indexing' problems on 1837, or one time somebody thought they'd found a death when it was really a birth... Kate. |

Yes it's free BMD I am talking about, here are the details Births Jun 1888 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lane Mary Strand 1b 643 Her birthday is actually 13th February 1888, so when I found the above on BMD thats why I checked it on 1837. Thanks for the interest. Lynda |

Hi Lynda, That birth also appears in September Quarter on free bmd, which is correct according to the scan. The June one is a mistranscription. If it is on FreeBMD then is should be on the GRO index as freeBMD is a direct transcription but mistakes obviously happen from time to time, as in this case. Gwynne |

Here are a couple of entries from FreeBMD: Births Jun 1888 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lane Mary Strand 1b 643 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Sep 1888 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LANE Mary Strand 1b 643 The Sep one has a pair of glasses next to it so you can check the image, and the June one doesn't. Also the district name (Strand) for the June one is in italics, which means they aren't sure, and I believe it could be that the page number 643 is not in the range used for Strand in that quarter? Just checking the Sep image at the moment. Unfortunately I don't have any 1837 online credits to check on there, but my guess is you will find it under September. That would mean her birth was registered outside the time limit if you have the correct date of birth. Back soon.. Kate. |

Checked the September image on FreeBMD and it is correct (though very hard to make out) and definitely says July, August and September at the top. I'm still trying to work out where the June one came from, though... Kate. |

I have checked the image for the June Page and the entry isn't on it at all. Awaiting what Kate finds for Sept. Merry |

I see what you mean Johnathon the birth is listed twice, once June and again September, as I said My Nan was born in Feb, so doubt this would be her, but it is the right area, how odd. and she isn;t listed in the Jan-March quarter. Lynda |

The June one is just a mistake, it happens. The bmd volunteers make them from time to time - that's why their names are given so that they can correct mistakes. Gwynne |

Lynda, If it sounds right it could still be yours. People had to pay a small fine for late registration. Gwynne |

Thanks everyone for your help, Nan was born in Neal Street, Covent Garden, so the Strand is the right area. Lynda |

Hi Lynda Only a few days ago, I was looking for a marriage on 1837 and realised that the last name on one page didn't match the first name on the next page ... I checked the page numbers at the bottom and there was actually a page missing. Goodness only knows where it was, because this was fairly recent (1980) but if it can happen once, it could have happened other times. Mandy :) |
