Looked up Lou's info for Kate but Kate Isaacs was still living with her widowed mother in 1871, so its not that one. Will look up the other info tomorrow, when I have a clear head!!

thanx for your help, thats a good lead, especially as there is a Davis as a servant. Could she be related to Isaac Levys mother. That gives me something more to look for.

Unknown Report 5 Oct 2005 21:18

Wonder if these are linked to the Rufus Isaacs family somehow? Interesting that they have a Kate the right age and a couple of children with similar names to Kate's children and a Davis with them! Ann Davis abt 1840 London, England Servant St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Hannah Isaacs abt 1848 London, England Daughter St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Isaac Isaacs abt 1818 London, England Head St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Kate Isaacs abt 1852 London, England Daughter St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Lawrence Isaacs abt 1854 London, England Son St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Nathan Isaacs abt 1850 London, England Son St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Phoebe Isaacs abt 1858 London, England Daughter St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Rachel Isaacs abt 1822 London, England Wife St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Samuel Isaacs abt 1860 London, England Son St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Martha McNama abt 1835 London, England Servant St Botolph without Aldgate Middlesex Kate gives her birthplace as Aldgate on the 1891 census. I'm going off on one now.....back to looking for something more concrete. Sorry!

Hmm thats interesting, I'll have a look at those. Thanks. Unfortunately Levy is a very common name and Isaac Levy is like John Smith. I have looked at the Rufus Isaacs family (the rumour) but as yet have found nothing. The only possible link I came up with is Isaacs mother was Mary Davis. Rufus Isaacs mother was Sarah Davis. Hope that makes sense. Not really a link for Kate but rumours have a habit of changing throught he generations.

Ok..I'm probably going off on one here but these 2 from 1861 really interested me! Sarah Levy abt 1843 Spitalfields Servant Spitalfields Middlesex Barnett Michael abt 1855 Spitalfields Son Spitalfields Middlesex Isaac Michael abt 1817 Whitechapel Head Spitalfields Middlesex Levy Michael abt 1861 Spitalfields Son Spitalfields Middlesex Michael Michael abt 1805 Aldgate Brother Spitalfields Middlesex Rachael Michael abt 1828 Mile End Wife Spitalfields Middlesex Sarah Michael abt 1859 Spitalfields Daughter Spitalfields Middlesex Isaac is a General Dealer and the family are living at 20 Felly/Folly Street, Spitalfields Henry Levy abt 1828 Whitechapel Brother-in-law Spitalfields Middlesex Elizebeth Michaels abt 1831 Whitechapel Wife Spitalfields Middlesex Henry Michaels abt 1859 Shoreditch Son Spitalfields Middlesex Issaac Michaels abt 1825 Whitechapel Head Spitalfields Middlesex Maria Michaels abt 1854 Whitechapel Daughter Spitalfields Middlesex Semon Michaels abt 1857 Whitechapel Son Spitalfields Middlesex This Isaac is a ?? Coal Maker and they're also in Spitalfields at 10 Shepperd Street. 2 Michael/Michaels families with links to the Levy family 9yrs before Kate and Isaac married AND in Spitalfields where on one census 'Kate' claims to have been born??? Interested me! Lou

Merry Report 5 Oct 2005 20:59

I see that in 1881 and 1891 she gave her place of birth as Islington and Spitalfields (close together). I think the chances that she was living in Islington in 1861 are at least possible??? Now, an enormous chunk of Islington is missing from the 1861 census....................... Doesn't explain the lack of birth reg, but it wasn't compulsory until 1875. Merry

Witnesses on marriage cert are Samuel Lyons and Louis Isaacs (sec of synagogue). Kate must have signed her name as it doesnt say 'mark of'

OneStopGenealogy

OneStopGenealogy Report 5 Oct 2005 20:37

Forgot to say, actually Kate died giving birth to her 12th child!! Childrens names were Kate (Kitty), Elizabeth (Bessie), Isaac, Esther, Samuel, Rebecca, John, Emanuel, Phoebe, Rose & Florence. Anyone living in Laindon, Essex may recognise some names. There are roads named after Samuel, Emanuel and Florence.

Unknown Report 5 Oct 2005 20:34

Do you have the names of the witnesses from the marriage cert? The pizza gave me no bright ideas....very disappointed with it!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I have my grandmothers birth certificate and her mothers name is shown as Kate Levy formerly Michaels. if Kate lied about her name she certainly carried it on right up to the year before her death (my grandmother was just passed her first birthday when her mother died.) The rumour passing through the family about the mystery lady Kate certainly seems to be true

Just had a look at that 1861 image - definately Michaels although age out. Def looks like unmarried too. S

Sally-Anne Report 5 Oct 2005 19:06

There are 842 Kates born in Middlesex in 1853 +/- 2! I guess if you can recognise Jewish names and places, you might be able to narrow it down a bit. What did Kate call her first daughter? Might be her mum's name. Sally

Unknown Report 5 Oct 2005 19:04

I had a look at no. 1 Stoney Street on 1861 census, on the offchance. No Kates or variants, but I did find my husband's lot (there are several households, all with Jewish-sounding surnames). Husband's head of household was a Joel and with him is a 'sister' , though I suspect she is really a sister in law, transcribed as MICHIELS, Sarah Sister Unmarried F 16 Servant Haven't got any more credits so can't check the original image to see if its really Michaels. nell

Esta Report 5 Oct 2005 18:58

It's a bit of a puzzle isn't it...........I just thought that seen as Kate had 5 children it might be worth checking what her name is on one of their BC........Just trying to eliminate any possibles !...........

thanx any thoughts helpful I have been to family records centre and looked through all the index books for births between 1851 and 1855 and found no kate michaels, so if she was illegitimate she must have been registered under a different surname.
