Find Ancestors

Seeking all/any info., available, to find Ancestor CALVIN EVANS, his siblings, and his parents, please. :) Sorry, have no other info., except: At age 21 Calvin was probably living in Gloucester. He was married to Sophia (?Sophie), and they had at least one child (Charles Calvin Evans, born 4th December 1864). Will greatly appreciate any help from a kind person. Hi Suzanne! Thank you for this fantastic information! :)))))) You've made me VERY happy!! (not shouting - just emphasizing). :) Now we have all these extra Ancestors, hitherto unknown. Your speed is astonishing. I've only just checked my Thread. I didn't dream of such a rapid response!. Thank you for all your time and help. May I ask again please, for help with 1851 Census details for the family of ROBERT EVANS, wife Ann, children Henry, Calvin, Mark, and ?? any additional children. Yes, on the 1861 Census - it shows CALVIN EVANS as Head of household - aged 25 and a Whitesmith - I believe he was a journeyman - and 'think' that a Whitesmith then, is what we call today, a Silversmith. Have been hunting, but can't find Calvin and Sophia on the 1881 Census - don't know why - been trying through LDS - family dot search dot org etc., But somebody within GR may have a better 1881 Census?? Was also thinking Calvin and Sophia may have left Gloucester. Possibly moved to Lancashire (??), maybe somewhere near to Preston?. No real evidence on this, sorry. Anyway, I'm thrilled with all the new Ancestors and will be keen to follow their passage through the decades, if possible. I too can not find the family in 1881 however found Sophia with 2 of her children in 1891: Evans, Charlotte abt 1865 Gloucestershire, England Daughter Cheltenham Gloucestershire Evans, Sophia abt 1836 Chellaston, Gloucestershire, England Head Cheltenham Gloucestershire Evans, William abt 1864 Chellaston, Gloucestershire, England Son Cheltenham Gloucestershire Sophia's occupation is recorded as a Caretaker The address is 16 Priory Street Cheltenham It also clearly marks her as Married and not widowed even though Head of the house.

By 1901 Sophia is recorded as Widow. Charlotte is still living with her: Charlotte Evans abt 1869 Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Cheltenham Christchurch Gloucestershire Sophia Evans abt 1834 Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England Head Cheltenham Christchurch Gloucestershire Sophia no occupation recorded. Charlotte is recorded as Upholstere - own account. The address is 10 Old Millbrook Terrace, Cheltenham Christchurch.

Hi Deb, Thank you very much for your additional info., re Calvin & Sophia EVANS, family and children. I'm sorry I was not able to acknowledge you before this. I am a 'Senior'- Newbie, nudging 70 yrs; - Not good health and limited access to computer - so it tends to take me a little while to get things done!! Your time and hard work finding this latest info., is very much appreciated. If I put my next query out on this Thread, will some kind persons still see it, and try to work on it to help me, please? Or do I need to put a new 'Thread' up each time I have a question, please? Anyway, I'm puzzled as to why there seems to be no trace of the family above, on the 1881 Census. Do you think the name may be 'lurking' on the 1881, but under an incorrect spelling?.......and if that's the case, how might we go about searching for them? The first instinctive name 'Hunches' that come to me, are Evens, Evins, Evons, and Ewan or Ewans. Obviously the family was still in Cheltenham Glouc., in 1891, as you found them, and by 1901, Sophia was then widowed, but still she and Charlotte (youngest child) are sharing accommodation at Millbrook Tce. Cheltenham. It seems this entire family never strayed too far from Northleach and Cheltenham and Gloucester. They don't appear to have ever left County Glouc. If you know, or can think of a way to 'find Sophia and the children' in 1881, it might show whether Calvin (husband) was alive, and working, and where ??, then. Calvin was a Whitesmith Journeyman - which I'm told meant he worked for other people, and not as a Master Craftsman working for himself - so perhaps he had to travel somewhere on a particular job? Maybe he could have been listed in the 1881 census, as a 'visitor', traveller, lodger, or something ?Maybe in a nearby village, district or neighbouring county?. Maybe he was in hospital? I'm rather bemused by all this, and as you can probably tell, struggling to figure it! (LOL) And I don't know where, or what, to look for, to find him!! However, I did want to thank you Deb, for your kindness and time devoted to finding Sophia and children, through the later decades. I also wondered whether it's possible that you and Suzanne Butler, may have access to all the Census images and whether each of you would be willing to e-mail the images to me please? I think I'll email via GR internally, a little 'Private Message' (PM) about Census Images to you and Suzanne - wherein I could nominate an e-mail addy - rather than on this Thread. Finally, would it be possible for a Kind Helper to try to find Calvin Evans MARRIAGE to Sophia (nee ????) Possibly 1856 to 1858; probably in Co. Glouc. I've spent all my time looking through LDS's IGI and 1881 Census etc., but found nothing. I was lucky however, that I found Calvin's parents - Robert and Ann Evans in LDS 1881 - they were 75 and 74 yrs and still at Northleach, Gloucester. Robert's occupation states 'Almsman Late Carpenter (No)' and his wife Ann's occupation is shown as 'Almsman'. Can someone please tell me what this would have meant to this elderly couple in 1881, please? I know this seems like a lot of questions and a little 'higgledy-piggledy' - and so my apologies! - just trying to get a handle on all this amazing ancestry, we had no knowledge existed!!. Hi Sue, Thank you so much for finding Calvin Evans, away from County Glouc., in WALES, in 1871 Census. This is marvellous! Please forgive my 'Newbie' status - as this leaves me needing to ask questions, which to the more experienced and knowledgeable GR members, may seem a little stupid. Living DownUnder, never having visited England, and UK, Home of all our Ancestors, leaves me feeling very lacking in where to search, and what to look for next. With CALVIN EVANS: he 'seems' to have vanished into thin air after 1871. Nobody has been successful yet, in finding him. Therefore I have to ask this question: Did WALES run its own, separate Censuses? (i.e., Wales population not included in the British 1881, 1891 Censuses??) I was thinking (?), if WALES conducted separate Censuses, then maybe CALVIN EVANS remained in County Monmouthshire, and lived and worked there until he died. NEXT question: IF, ( for whatever reason?) CALVIN had never returned to live with Sophia and the children - and it appears he WASN'T with them on the crucial Census Days of 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 - Where, and how do I find, the separate WALES Censuses please?. If at some point the WALES population became part of the overall British Censuses, then I would be having to look for a Death registration for CALVIN EVANS, presumably anytime after 1871. Does this make some sense to anybody, please?? All new thoughts and ideas most welcome please. !!! My sincere thanks and gratitude to the wonderful GR Helpers who've responded to my Requests. Hi Kit Ive checked the census in wales for 1881 and cant find Calvin. Ive checked on FREEBMD for an entry of death and still no sign of him. freebmd(.)rootsweb(.)com/cgi/search(.)pl covers Births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales from 1837-1911 and is free to search. There are still patches that have yet to be added so can't be 100% reliable. For censuses the most common site to use is www(.)Ancestry(.)com covers 1861-1901 but is a subscription site. Suzanne

Hi Suzanne, Thank you for your lovely messages earlier. You are a very 'Early-bird' it seems!!! - ....... Seriously tho', your speed and accuracy is astonishing. Thank you for the FreeBMD Marriage for Calvin Evans - Yes definitely time to order his Marriage Certificate - here's hoping it will tell us a little more about his Wife 'Sophia'. Thank you too for the definition of Almsman.... I imagine that would have been pretty essential support for Calvin's parents: Dear Old Robert and Ann in 1881; when they were aged in mid-seventies. I shall try to order Calvin's son: Charles' Birth Certificate also. Doesn't the true ancestral detail blow some of the long-held 'Family Myths' completely out of the water?? Family-lore for more than a hundred years here, maintained Charles came from Wales - i.e. was Welsh-born. Clearly not so. Calvin and Sophia, and their children, ALL born in Gloucestershire!! Charles (son of Calvin) became a career soldier. Distinguished himself quite well. Was H.M. Queen Victoria's Colour-Sergeant, for his Regiment. Was given special commendation by H.M. Queen V. for some Campaigns. After 'retiring' from his Military career which saw Chas., Wife, and children, undertake several tours of duty in different parts of the Globe, plus active service in the Boer War - something captured their imagination and they re-located themselves, and all children to Australia. One hundred years ago I'm sure Aust., would have been an enormous culture shock to them all. I think they'd been sold the idea that Aust., was THE Great Land of Opportunity. I 'almost' remember Charles - certainly remember his Wife and rest of the family. Very, very few descendant left now. With a little bit of luck - hoping to find what may have become of Charles' brothers and sisters. Nobody knew anything of them! But, one step at a time - and one day at a time. I'm sorry I hadn't gotten the promised PM to you Suzanne...only due to my NewbieStatus - and limited access to 'Puter and Internet. However, acknowledgement here on the Thread is important. I do so much want to thank you all for the fantastic help. YES Please!.....I'd love you to forward Ancestry Census pages for me. Shall include a reliable e-dress in my PM. Hi Kit Still can not find them in 1881 but I can tell you that they are not at the addresses given in 1871 and 1891. I think I found William in 1881 as a Lodger in Cirenchester, Gloucester, occupation farm labourer/melitia recruit. And I think his occupation on the 1891 census is 2nd ft reg (2nd foot regiment perhaps?). Suzanne
