For: LOUISE On The Meridian Line: Dear Louise, Here's hoping you'll see this on the Thread. Thank you so much for adding your note. Very much appreciated. Yes, you're absolutely right! I have been so blessed by the wonderful GR Experts with my endless questions and queries. They are incredibly kind, generous, and their expertise takes my breath away. This is why I call them 'My Lookup ANGELS' - and I can't thank them sufficiently, I feel. I was most interested in YOUR problem. I've printed out your message. I visited a couple of sites on the Internet, just browsing and searching for various clues. None materialised! :( Eventually I left an enquiry with the Glouc. Family History Society, re the 1881 Census. Yes I DO appreciate how difficult a Forename-Only Search, can be - Tried the same thing - hunting for Sophia (Lophia, Tophia) all possible variation on the theme!! - also looked for all 'Calvin'. Also looked for all 'Charlotte', on the 1881 as a whole: All counties - All districts etc., then on yet another refined/narrowed search: All districts of County Gloucestershire. No luck!! And in my humble opinion Louise, if these amazing Genea Wizards cannot find them on the 1881 - then I feel I must think about searching Ireland. No record of them in Scotlandspeople. Apart from the above - I might have to concede defeat......Perhaps I'll put a note in for the 1881 'blank period', that the entire family 'Took a Flight in a Spaceship while the 1881 Census was being conducted'!!! [LOL :) :) ] When, of if I receive a reply from GFHS, I could send you a note by PM (Private Message) if you are interested and haven't had any success over next two or three weeks. A PM, because if I add something here on this Original Thread, you may not think to pop in and see what's doing - therefore you could miss my note. All for now - fingers crossed for you with Thomas and Sarah, and me with Sophia and Calvin and children in 1881. :) :) Again, thank you and Best Wishes. Kit :) :) Australia Sent Mon 5 Sept., 2005

For Sue Moger: Re: Your messages of Mon 29 & Tues 30/8/2005; Dear Sue, Thank you very, very much for your wonderful help finding CALVIN EVANS in Llangattock Vibon Abel, in Monmouthshire, in 1871 Census. Also for your second note re the Wales Census info., I haven't had sufficient time and Computer-access yet, to try to get entry to the Wales Census. Unless it is free-viewing, I shall have to wait until I can ask for a look-up again by some-one who has Ancestry membership. However, to me it's astonishing that you found him there in 1871. Do you know please?, If CALVIN EVANS had remained in Monmouthshire for several years after 1871, and had perhaps died in Monmouthshire, (without ever returning to his Home, in County Gloucestershire).... Would Calvin's Death have been recorded and registered in Monmouthshire or Wales, please??. Or, would I need to try to search England GRO 1837-1901 Registrations, to find a DEATH for Calvin Evans, please? Any advice re his Death records will be very much appreciated. Again Sue, many thanks for your kind help. Best Wishes. Kind regards, Kit x :) :) Australia Sent: Fri., 2nd Sept., 2005.

For Suzanne Butler: Re Calvin & Sophia EVANS and children; Dear Suzanne, :) :) Thank you so very much for the additional info., you found and put up on my Thread for me. This is just amazing, and enormously appreciated!! :) :) You were brilliant to find WILLIAM EVANS on 1881 Census. Yes, I believe it would be 'our' William - he's there as a Lodger in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. He was listed as a Militia Recruit/Agric. labourer. Then you found him on the 1891 Census - in what you thought may have been the 2nd foot regiment. I agree - thought it added up with his slightly older brother Charles - wondered if it may be 2nd Gls regiment? (Second Gloucester Regiment)? Would it be correct to conclude that the 2nd Gloucester Regiment may have been based somewhere near Cirencester, do you know? Many many thanks, for all your brilliant searches and discoveries. Take care and very Best Wishes. :) Regards, Kit xx :) :) Australia Sent: Fri., 2 Sept., 2005.

For Christine Hook: Re 1861 for Robert and family; Dear Christine, :) Thank you very much for your hunting up Robert and Ann EVANS and family in 1861. This is very, very much appreciated. It also introduces me to two 'new members' of their family, i.e. George and Mary Ann. Thank you for your kindness, again, and Best Wishes. Regards, Kit x :) :) Australia Sent: Fri., 2 Sept., 2005.

For Margaret: Re Old Occupations; Dear Margaret, :) Just wanted to thank you for the referral to Google for Old Occupations. I did go there and found a wealth of information. Adopted your advice... Took the first one. Peeped into a couple that sounded interesting...really thought the Hall Genealogy Website - Old Occupation Names - was just great!! Definitely recommend it - and I loved 'Gareth's Help Page - Occupations' Don't know if I'm allowed to put this up here - but anyway.....!! .... http(://)rmhh(.)co(.)uk(/)occup(/) Is there a specific GR 'Board' where one is supposed to put these items of interest, please? Taking this moment to thank you very much for your kindness. Take care and Best Wishes. Regards, Kit xx :) :) Australia Sent: Fri., 2 Sept., 2005.

Dear Rose, :) You are just wonderful! I'm so sorry if you thought I hadn't appreciated your tremendous work in finding ALL the details you put up on this Thread. Unfortunately, (as I think I said elsewhere on the Thread) I'm an aged invalid person, (in England what you call an O.A.P. -but I'm also 85% incapacitated), and I have two big problems - Poor health and very limited access to the Computer. I know this may sound strange to perhaps younger persons, but the above problems seriously affect and restrict the things I need, and want, to do. So, please Rose, I don't want you to think you were being ignored and that I was ungrateful. Absolutely NOT the case.. Quite the opposite in fact - when I saw all those wonderful entries I was touched to the point of tears. I was, and am, extremely appreciative that you had put so much time and energy into searching for me! :) :) I can tell you, there is NO WAY in the world, I could have done this for, or by myself. I thank you enormously. I also hope that you'll forgive what at first, may have seemed 'rudeness' (on my part), in not having answered you before this. I will send a little 'Thank You' note by PM (private message). to you. And also whilst I'm here at the keyboard, I do want to PUBLICLY answer and thank, Deborah Coone; Margaret Atkinson; Christine Hook; Suzanne Butler; and Sue Moger; and as above, The Last Rose of Winter. Their entries on this Thread are all SO amazing! :) :) I'm only sorry circumstances didn't permit me to thank each and everyone of you wonderful people, on the SAME DAY THAT YOU SO GENEROUSLY found and published these gems of information on my Thread. I did send a little note to Debi but I shall send another to her (PM), to thank for the Census images. As you will all probably have read in the messages on my Thread (above), we're still hunting for Sophia and the children, plus her husband Calvin, all of whom seem to have vanished into 'thin air' for the 1881 Census. I shall be trying to search Scotlandspeople at my first opportunity. I'm frustrated beyond words that it takes me so long to get things done. :( However, I do NOT intend to give up on this. After all, no-body in all the preceding years, to the best of my knowledge, has attempted to do this Research. I think you ALL deserve bouquets - because even if I never find another item of info - I am just SO FAR AHEAD than anyone has been able to achieve, in more than three hundred years. For this, I humbly thank you all, once again. :) :) I need to learn more about Monmouthshire and Wales Censuses. CALVIN Evans trained as a Bell Hanger from the age of 15 years. He married and began his home and family with wife Sophia. It seems however, that by the 1870's Calvin has had to give up Bell Hanging, and revert to simpler, less well-paid work such as whitesmith or tinsmith - so he could remain in Gloucestershire with Sophia and their little children. It appears however, as the number of children increased, so did Calvin's need for more regular income, and better-paid work. He's possibly had to leave home and travel to County Monmouthshire. There he has taken up Lodgings with the Sibbons family. In Monmouthshire, where I understand there were larger industrial companies specialising in heavy iron, copper and tin moulding and founding work, this would seem a natural place for Calvin to seek work. I don't really know - and if there's anyone else in GR who is well familiar with Bell Hanging, and Monmouthshire, perhaps they could let me know more about it, please? I'm assuming that as Calvin progressed beyond the bell hooking (manufacturing of the bells), perhaps he's become 're-promoted' or reverted, to his original profession or trade - i.e. that of a Bell Hanger. Does this suggest to anybody else, that Calvin and other men, would have travelled to help 'Hang' the Bells, in various Chapel, Church, Cathedral Towers, and other Public Buildings in Towns in neighbouring Counties? In which case, perhaps Calvin had been sent to Ireland or Scotland (as Debi suggested) - in order to hang some new Bells - it would be 'nice' to think that Sophia and children had been able to join Calvin (on a 'holiday' ???) whilst he was working with the Bells. Apart from bad mistranscriptions/corruption of surname EVANS, this is all I can think of, to explain the family's apparent absence from County Gloucestershire for the 1881 Census. This might ring bells (no pun intended!!!) amongst other GR members and Readers. Any info., or insights will always be most appreciated. :) My sincere thanks and very best wishes to all, Kindest regards, Kit xxxxxx :) :) Australia Sent: Friday 2nd Sept., 2005.

Hi Suzanne, Thank you for your lovely messages earlier. You are a very 'Early-bird' it seems!!! - ....... Seriously tho', your speed and accuracy is astonishing. Thank you for the FreeBMD Marriage for Calvin Evans - Yes definitely time to order his Marriage Certificate - here's hoping it will tell us a little more about his Wife 'Sophia'. Thank you too for the definition of Almsman.... I imagine that would have been pretty essential support for Calvin's parents: Dear Old Robert and Ann in 1881; when they were aged in mid-seventies. I shall try to order Calvin's son: Charles' Birth Certificate also. Doesn't the true ancestral detail blow some of the long-held 'Family Myths' completely out of the water?? Family-lore for more than a hundred years here, maintained Charles came from Wales - i.e. was Welsh-born. Clearly not so. Calvin and Sophia, and their children, ALL born in Gloucestershire!! Charles (son of Calvin) became a career soldier. Distinguished himself quite well. Was H.M. Queen Victoria's Colour-Sergeant, for his Regiment. Was given special commendation by H.M. Queen V. for some Campaigns. After 'retiring' from his Military career which saw Chas., Wife, and children, undertake several tours of duty in different parts of the Globe, plus active service in the Boer War - something captured their imagination and they re-located themselves, and all children to Australia. One hundred years ago I'm sure Aust., would have been an enormous culture shock to them all. I think they'd been sold the idea that Aust., was THE Great Land of Opportunity. I 'almost' remember Charles - certainly remember his Wife and rest of the family. Very, very few descendant left now. With a little bit of luck - hoping to find what may have become of Charles' brothers and sisters. Nobody knew anything of them! But, one step at a time - and one day at a time. I'm sorry I hadn't gotten the promised PM to you Suzanne...only due to my NewbieStatus - and limited access to 'Puter and Internet. However, acknowledgement here on the Thread is important. I do so much want to thank you all for the fantastic help. YES Please!.....I'd love you to forward Ancestry Census pages for me. Shall include a reliable e-dress in my PM. Thank you again Suzanne.. and yes. I'll be thinking very seriously about an Ancestry membership....but I need to budget for THAT!! Will want to spend on getting GRO Certificates a.s.a.p. Best wishes, Regards, Kit x :) :) Australia Sent Tuesday 30 August 2005

Hi Kit Ive checked the census in wales for 1881 and cant find Calvin. Ive checked on FREEBMD for an entry of death and still no sign of him. freebmd(.)rootsweb(.)com/cgi/search(.)pl covers Births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales from 1837-1911 and is free to search. There are still patches that have yet to be added so can't be 100% reliable. For censuses the most common site to use is www(.)Ancestry(.)com covers 1861-1901 but is a subscription site. Suzanne

Hi Sue, Thank you so much for finding Calvin Evans, away from County Glouc., in WALES, in 1871 Census. This is marvellous! Please forgive my 'Newbie' status - as this leaves me needing to ask questions, which to the more experienced and knowledgeable GR members, may seem a little stupid. Living DownUnder, never having visited England, and UK, Home of all our Ancestors, leaves me feeling very lacking in where to search, and what to look for next. With CALVIN EVANS: he 'seems' to have vanished into thin air after 1871. Nobody has been successful yet, in finding him. Therefore I have to ask this question: Did WALES run its own, separate Censuses? (i.e., Wales population not included in the British 1881, 1891 Censuses??) I was thinking (?), if WALES conducted separate Censuses, then maybe CALVIN EVANS remained in County Monmouthshire, and lived and worked there until he died. NEXT question: IF, ( for whatever reason?) CALVIN had never returned to live with Sophia and the children - and it appears he WASN'T with them on the crucial Census Days of 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 - Where, and how do I find, the separate WALES Censuses please?. If at some point the WALES population became part of the overall British Censuses, then I would be having to look for a Death registration for CALVIN EVANS, presumably anytime after 1871. Does this make some sense to anybody, please?? All new thoughts and ideas most welcome please. !!! My sincere thanks and gratitude to the wonderful GR Helpers who've responded to my Requests. We simply would never have gotten this far, so quickly, without your great kindnesses. Go all you wonderful Genies!!! :) :) xxx Thank you Sue, It helps enormously! Best Wishes.
