Margaret Hi No luck with Patrick Bray infact no Bray's at all born in Ireland. The same for Annie Mckenna. I have a James Miller and family but no Elizabeth but that could be either she was away from home that night or James her husband was a Widow. Better luck with Buchanan's I think this could be the right family!! James Here is a possible for Margaret and young Robert, Margaret is listed as Head but not as a widow - as married so her husband is sway from home which would fit with you saying they immigrated to Canada that year, maybe Peter was on board ship to Canada at the time of the census and sent for Margaret and kids later on. There were no Peter Roll's anywhere else in Scotland on their own and I checked England and Wales just in case! Hi Michelle, Many thanks for the information on the Colburn and Ross families in Edinburgh. I notice that Colburn has been transcribed as Colborn, but it is definitely my family, because of the ages and birthplaces of Johns' parents. It also looks as if it could very well be my Ross family. I don't know exactly when Margarets' father, John was born, but i know that his father was named James, which with the old Scottish way of naming children would make sense for his eldest son to be called James. Many thanks once again, your help is really appreciated, regards Norman.

Would it be possible for you to do a look-up in the 1851 Lanarkshire index for an Arthur HAWTHORN(E).?? He was born in 1836 so would be about 15 years old. His parents would be another Arthur HAWTHORN(E) and either a Christina or Margaret. Any information would be great. Thank you Sally

Val I can highly recommend scotlandspeople site, it is by far the best place to start your research in Scotland followed by visits to New Register House in Edinburgh but it can be very costly ( I think I must own shares in it by now!!) I just think that it would be nice if they allowed copies of their censuses to be put on discs for us lot to be able to purchase as we do with censuses in England. I have heard that S & N are negoitating for this to happen so we just have to be patient!! You can buy microfilm rolls for parish records from New Register House but at £45 per reel You have to be sure that it would be cost effective plus have access to a viewer ( These reels are for pros I think!! cheers Michelle

John It is very difficult without a birthplace or exact age, but there are two possibles in the frame, lots of others but none with a George and Christina together - or there are Georges as widows but none in Barony/born Barony and the same for Christinas as widows. The first one is a Christina with a Thomas G Smith, which could be G for George and could mean that he used George instead of Thomas. The second is the only George of that age group Widowed but living in Barony. I think you would need to track down their marriage in 1849 from Scotlandspeople site to help you further or ask for a look up in New Register House in Edinburgh. Hi Michelle, Would you please check the 1881 census for John colburn and Margaret Nisbet Ross in Edinburgh. John Colburn was born 1869 Edinburgh and Margaret Ross was born 1868 Edinburgh. These were my great grandparents and i am hoping they would at that time be living with their respective parents,(John and Jane Colburn) and (John and Annie Ross). Any details you can find will be gratefully received. Many thanks Norman.

(sorry its a long winded explanation but I have found this pattern of naming over and over again and can help sometimes!!) Located in the parish of Old Monkland, Coatbridge was a sleepy collection of villages until the late eighteenth century. Then, with the discovery of ironstone, the building of the Monkland Canal and the increased mining of coal, the sleepy villages grew together into the town of Coatbridge If Catherine is Alice's sister and both were born in Coatbridge it might follow that if they had any other siblings they too would be born in Coatbridge (my mind works in funny ways sometimes!!) So taking all that into consideration and as Alice was born in 1858c and therefore wouldn't be on the 1851 census index, I decided to see if I could find a possible set of parents on the 1881 in the area and came up with this one - Dwelling: No 20 Stone Row Census Place: Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0203699 GRO Ref Volume 652-2 EnumDist 7 Page 27 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Patrick DOLAN M 60 M Ireland Rel: Head Occ: Licensed Hawker Small Goods Annie DOLAN M 58 F Ireland Rel: Wife Margaret DOLAN 14 F Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland Rel: Daur Annie DOLAN 8 F Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland Rel: Daur Occ: Scholar Michael DOLAN 6 M Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland Rel: Son Occ: Scholar John KILROY W 55 M Ireland Rel: Boarder Occ: Iron Works Labourer Joanna KILROY 11 F Calder, Lanark, Scotland Rel: Boarder Occ: Scholar Daniel MARTIN U 20 M Ireland Rel: Boarder Occ: Masons Labourer I know its only guesswork but you never know!! They could be related although I can only give you the names, ages place of birth, parish they are living in and census refs. If you want the list let me know. Cheers Michelle
