Lou if its not too much trouble could I also have a copy of the prints as all of my family have been brought up in the Ashton under Lyne area. The family name is Ashton and they have always lived in the Richmond St and Welbeck St area. It would be lovely to see what the places were like then! I will send you my email address...thanks alot Bev

Frances There's lots of pics of the 'West End' area that Welbeck Street and Portland Street come under and a photo of the munitions factory before and after the explosion. I'll check other pics for the names you mentioned I'll get them copied, let me have your postal addie to send them to Lou

Hello Lou My husbands mother and family came from Ashton U Lyne and Dukinfield, her maiden name was Sharratt, her mothers was Hampton and step-mothers maiden name was Batty, also the name Swain. Ryecroft St. Welbeck St. and Portland St are names that come to mind. My M-I-L was born 1905 and was caught up in the big gas explosion that occured about 1915??, she was either going or returning home from school at the time. Frances

This afternoon I've located 4 beautiful books and a box of old prints, mainly of places (although a few of people) around Ashton under Lyne, Dukinfield, Stalybridge, Hyde, Haughton and Denton, in my parents loft. They seem to be from the mid 1800's to early 1900's, showing shops, factories etc 'as they were then'. If anyone has any ancestors in any of these areas and would like a photocopy of any of the prints, let me know which area you are interested in. Their name would be good too cos some of the shots in the books name the people in the photos! Lou
