I have for several months been trying to find my great great grandfather and his family on the 1901. I have tried using the 1901 decoder, the 1901 for Hampshire (on Ancestry), and have spent ages trying variants of their names. I have found his wife, (I say wife but I have also never found proof of any marriage), Alice Amelia Atkins, she is a patient in a hospital in Portsmouth (which is where they are from). Details are, John Atkins (my great, great grandfather), age 31 ish. Alice Amelia (in hospital). John, son, 9. George, son, 7. Alice Louisa Adelaide, daughter 5. Sarah Ann, daughter, 4. Thomas Gordon, son, 2. James Herbert, son, 1 or less. All born in Portsmouth. Many thanks for your time. Julie in Portsmouth.

Hi Julie Are the ages above relevent to the 1901 census? Have you tried to locate either adult on 1891? I'm guessing they wouldn't have been married by then Sam

Unknown Report 12 Jul 2004 20:03

Hi, Firstly, from what I am reading none of the children where around for the 1891, so basically you are looking for husband & wife only in 1891 ... chances are they weren't married until 1891/2 since oldest boy born 92. If Mum was in hospital in 1901, then chances are that children are split up amongst family members ... Grandparents etc, so maybe it would help if we had inlaws names or other family members we can check against for 1901. Elaine :-) Hiya Smiley !!!!

Hi, Don't suppose for one minute you have any childrens birth certs have you ? or you would know Mums maiden name ? Elaine :-)

Smiley Report 12 Jul 2004 20:10

Hi Elaine :) I'm assuming certs are providing the childrens info, since they have not been located on a census. Is that right Julie? So can we have the maiden name of their mum please Sam

Am I missing something ... I'm not 100% at the moment. So please forgive me if I'm way off mark here ..! If you can't find them on 1891 or 1901, and you haven't located the marriage ... how have you got the childrens names ? If this is a stupid question then I'm off to bed cos I'm obviously not thinking straight ! Elaine :-)

Jubal Report 12 Jul 2004 20:25

Sam, Yes, sorry, the ages are what they would have been in 1901. Elaine, Yes, I would think they would either be single or newly married, as their first child was, like you say born 1892. Their parents names were George and Harriet Atkins and John and Jane Cole. Many thanks, Julie

Sorry that I dissappeared girls, touch of an upset stomach I'm afraid!! I got most of the children's details from the Search Room at the Records Office here in Portsmouth, they have a vast index card file relating to baptisms, marriages etc (which is where I got the years of birth from). J.

Apologies for absence girls, but I do have a note from my mother!!! Husband came home and wanted feeding.....Cheek! I'm still looking for the Atkins crew ;)

Jubal Report 12 Jul 2004 20:45

Elaine, I'm not aware of a Lewis but you never know. The Atkins' were a fairly large family in Portsmouth and many of them were fishermen. Don't know if that helps at all! J.

Rosemary, Checked it out, I see William Eades wife was a Sarah, John Atkins had a sister Sarah AND her birth date ties in! Two down 6 to go! I wonder WHAT happened and where the father was, George (age 7), has to be around somewhere, he is my great grandfather. Thanks again, much appreciated. J.
