I had no problem with viewing the images. a useful site but very time consuming with having to submit everything bit by bit. Probably of more use if you have a specific date to confirm rather than doing searches as it takes or ever to work out where the page is you want. some of the images being originals are almost unreadable too. still it is free and, if you have time, it could be invaluable. I suspect it is another site that will quickly be a victim of its own success as i couldn't get on thisafternoon. Ann Glos

YOU GET the image of the whole page of entries, same as on 1837online , the real gro index page, not a transcription. Kim

just to let you know I did get in , I didn't seem to have the right quicktime application, so I downloaded it and it works , images are a bit small so I used the view button on the browser and selected largest text size , seems to work although have not managed to save the page yet as that bit comes up in grey... I'll get there... probably last.... but I'll do it I'm determined..... Kim

There is a thread on the Tips Board on this subject aswell. Check that out too for possible solutions to problems: "Freebmd images - what am I doing wrong? "

It seems that some of the pages (mainly newer ones) are .tiff files....when I do the last selection on the pages to select...I get the option to save or open the file...I can save this to file and view it later.. But..... With some of the earlier stuff, the files are .gif files.....my browser tries to open these directly...and probably because they are quite large, I don't see much..apart from a bit of the image in the left hand side of my browser.... So if you then click on this part of the image, and then do a right click with your mouse...you get a menu which allows you to do a "Save picture as" ...you can then save this to your pc....I did this as a bitmap (.bmp) file...which you can then view using "Paint" or another application like that... Hope you understand all that...but it does work if you can ! Good Luck Martin

Has anyone got into this site? I've tried but must be doing something wrong-quite possible. Any help in putting in the correct title would be a great help. I'm keen to try! Thanks Maz

I managed to get all through the various 'submits on marriages until i came to marriages starting with? Then I couldn't put anything in the box. I assume that you have to type in the first letters as in the GRO 1837? Any advice please? Ann Glos

Hope someone can help me! I'm desperate!! Trying to download the images I got the same message as Jeanette (Some of the MIME types previously associated with Quick Time plugin are currently associated with other applications. Do you want to restore these MIME associations to Quick Time?) I clicked "No" and could see the pages OK. After a couple of times of repeating this for each page I looked at I clicked on "Don't show this page again. However since I did that I can't view any pages even the ones I looked at previously! How do I get the box to appear again? I've tried all ways I could think of in Quick Time.

Marion, do you get a download option, with yours. I get it with some images and not with others. If i download, I can then view with IRFANVIEW, and enlarge the image.

What an excellent site Steve - saving me a fortune on 1837. Haven't found anyone one yet as It's a bit hit and miss as to whether you get the right page 1st time round - but with a little perseverence I am getting the hang of it.

Hi folks, I have another, different problem with my pc .. so I'm going onto the 'Tips Board' for help ... there are a few folks on there that know alot more about PC's than us !! My PC now doesn't like the 'Back' button .. and tells me my pages are 'expired' even after 10 seconds !! Maybe someone on 'Tips' can help us us with our various probs.. Elaine :-)

Just tried again. With marriages, as above, but with births I got the image directly, without the download option. maybe this depends on the year. I suspect that my version of Internet Explorer has some kind of plug-in for TIF files, as these are what freeBMD are sending. I'll look into it again later, but perhaps in the meantime, someone else will come up with the answer. p.s. freeBMD says: Images on this site are supplied in a variety of formats (jpg, gif, tif), and you may need to configure your computer to work with these formats. FreeBMD cannot assist with configuring your computer.

Any computer techies out there? I go through the whole process of choosing all the options then when I get to the bit where it's about to display the image I get this message Some of the MIME types previously associated with the Quick Time plugin are currently associated with other applications. Should I restore these MIME type associations to Quick Time? My question is should I click on Yes? Jeanette
