Margaret I know I have asked you to look up these before. But thought i would ask again, in the hope I may be lucky second time round I am looking for Alexander Taylor Marr, who I am presuming would be between 20 and 30, possibly younger or slightly older. In 1889 he was an engine keeper possibly working at the docks in Edinburgh, so is likely to have the same occupation in 1881. In 1889 he married Isabella Newlands who I presume would be around the same age, not sure of her occupation but she would also be from around the Edinburgh area. If you can find either it would be great. I doubt very much they were living together as this would be unlikely before they married. Regards, Siobhan

Hi Siobhan, I presume that you have their marriage certificate? Do you have their parents names and their addresses on the certificate? Thanks Regards Margaret

Chris Report 23 Nov 2003 01:54

Yes Margaret - I'm pretty sure this is my husband's family. The Robert aged 64 is my husband's gggrandfather and you have found more children - Henrietta, John and a family for Alex. Robert and Margaret's eldest son Robert b 1850 married in NZ in 1879. Now I have ages for Robert and Margaret I can look for their births. Thanks so much, Christine

Lilian Report 24 Nov 2003 23:52

Hi Margaret, Please look in the 1881 census for Neil McLean, age about 44 and his wife, Margaret, age about 42. Also their son, Charles, age 18 or 19 who may be living with them. Charles was born in Tradeston, Glasgow in 1862 so they may still be there. Many thanks, Lilian

Hi Janet, Have you looked on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for the birth and possibly the marriage? It should be easy to find with that surname as it is not very common. Here are the details from the free search which tells you how many there were with the name Carnaghan registered - OPRI & SRI Birth & Christenings (1 January 1553 - 1902) 38 OPRI & SRI Marriages (1 January 1553 - 1927) 15 SRI Deaths (1855 - 1952) 34 Bear in mind that there will not by any certificates for any BMD's before 1855. You will only find an index to the parish registers but that should show the date and parents names. These are the only John Carnaghan's or similar on the 1881 - Dwelling: 27 St Andrew Street Kings Arms Hotel Census Place: Kelton, Kircudbright, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0224057 GRO Ref Volume 869 EnumDist 3 Page 1 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Thomas CARNOCHAN M 35 M Ringleggahe, Kirkcudbright, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Hotel Keeper Posting Master Christina CARNOCHAN M 32 F Gateside, Linlithgow, Scotland Rel: Wife Occ: Hotel Keepers Wife Mary A. Janet Report 25 Nov 2003 21:59

Hi Margaret thanks so much for looking for me . Other members of the family have always got stumped when they reach George. My grandmother was also born in Scotland. Her name was Nellie McBain Carnaghan born1882. My aunt her daughter said McBain was just a name they used but there must be more to it than that. I know they moved to Hastings but when I dont Know. The thing is Im trying to find my Fathers tree but with a name like Evans I thought it would be easier to trace my grandmother with a name like Carnaghan to find him. How wrong can you be!! If you could find out anything about Nellie it would give me something to go on thanks again for all your help Im very grateful Janet Fuller

Unknown Report 25 Nov 2003 23:05

Hi Janet, If Nellie was born in 1882 I will not be able to find her on the 1881 Census? You should find her easily of Scotlands People. Have you tried that yet? I could put money on it that McBain will probably be her mother or grandmothers maiden name. Let me know if I can be of more help. Regards Margaret

Hello Margaret, Remember me!! I am so sorry to be a pain, but my Dad has now agreed with me that the name I should be looking up is NOT Helen Stewart Watt, as he always argued, but HELEN STEWART or STUART born in 1863 could be 1868! in Arbroath Forfar Scotland. I could NEVER understand why he thought her maiden name was Watt, when her daughter was a Watt (Lillian) but who am I to argue!! Anyway I wondered if you could do me another favour and look up her details. household etc. I'm eternally grateful to you Best wishes Val
