I'm still trying to unravel a family skeleton i've discovered which may mean my partner thru to grandfather have the wrong name.... Hmmm..

...life is fun, but the past beats it by a mile!!

Afternoon Wayne and Germaine,
Have the answers :0))) as reported in the Daily Standard, Ontario 8/11/12.
James died resulting from injuries after falling 35 feet and lighting on his head at Interlake Tissue paper mills, where he was employed as a painter.
Also mentions he leaves a sister in Toronto!!
The paper followed his story till after his funeral.

I am absolutely chuffed to bits that I asked Jennifer to look up MI's.
Oh...and he emigrated in 1910, off to see if I can find him with his sister....now which one will it be?:0)) as none of them were on passenger list untill 1921!!

I have today mailed libraries and archives Ontario, so will wait to see if they find him.
I'm just so chuffed, that by asking for a MI look up from Jennifer led to me finding James :0)))

Wayne...I was joking about the barrel over the waterfalls...lol!
There was a lot on info on the death report, but just I shall chase the newspapers now.

Hi there, this maybe a really wild thought but have you tried to mail the major newspapers where he was living/died in Canada?

Is it a possibility his death made the local papers?

Really weird summising how someone died but he may have fallen from a building or maybe a vehicle accident? or could even have been an attack?

I have had a really busy afternoon....and found his death:0))))))
Jas Burkett Chickett 7th Nov 1912!!! in the hospital of St Catherine, county of Lincoln, Ontario.
Aged 23 years, son of Benjamin and Mary Chickett of England. Died of fractures of skull, accidental, 4 hours.

I think my grandfather must have added James to his Mothers MI and got a bit muddled. Mary was buried in 1941, so I guess them putting James the year before (1911) is understandable :0))

Still ned to find out what he was doing there though...lol! No occupation is listed. I'm hoping he wasn't one of those loonies going over Niagra Falls in a barrel!!! Apparently..that is very close to where he died.

I sent my mail to Lancs at 14;33pm today and have had a reply sent back 17;34pm to say there is no mention of him in the papers :0(((
The lady who mailed me has sent me an address to try and find his death in Canada, so that is my next line.
Bit too quick to reply for my liking :0))), takes me all day to read my paper..lol!

No I haven't gone into miltary records yet.
Haven't a clue where to start not many and I know the rest of their history.

Hi Germaine,
I've e-mailed Lancs library to see if there was an obit or funeral notice in the Lancaster papers that may shed some light. Fingers crossed there may be a mention.
Good thinking...ships crew...also maybe he was military?
Have no idea on what to do there as I only have coal/tin miners...never yet had to trace any one military wise :0((
Have to go and get dinner started and look like I've been doing house things...the men folk are due in. Will be back later on.

Jane I had a thougth last night.
I wonder if he was part of a ship's crew and that is why we couldn't find him on a passenger list.
Maybe he worked his pasage out there.
Don't know how to check this out though.
Shame the 1911 census isn't out you would be able to tell if he was still here so narrowing down the date he went over there.

Sue, the one you found I was hoping his age had been entered wrong, but it seems he is the one that Malcolm has found the army papers for, a distant cousin of my James :0(((

Is there anyway I can access death records? Maybe then I can find out roughly what he was doing in Canada. Or any archive information?

No. Scratch the James Birkett in Winnipeg. I found him and his sister Grace on the 1901 in England.

I saw that one Magaret .
What put me off was there was no sign of a sister named Grace on the 1901 census. Then maybe they were cousins. Perhaps Jane might know if there is a connection to the Dixons.

There's a James Birkett in Winnipeg on the 1911 census. He was age 21 born England, immigrated 1910. He's a nephew in the home of Alfred & Ellen Dixon, also born England. There's also a niece Grace Birkett, aged 16, immigrated 1910.
