Hi Vera,

sorry no ............ I've been caught by them before!

They were all definitely born in Oldham, Lancashire.

Benjamin's wife is Sarah, and I have a feeling she is a widow by the 1851 census .... although I can't find Benjamin's death.

Vera,

I've been around the hills and everywhere with these on the 1851.

I think there has been a really really bad mistranscription, but I can't pull the rabbit out of the hat!!

I think Sarah Schofield was Sarah Ashton before she married, but I can't find the marriage to prove that.

And Schofield is such a common name in the area!

can you give me the reference please?

SylviaInCanada Report 1 Oct 2007 21:39

ozi,

it's a possible, that I have looked at before

but there has never been any other rference to Sarah being born in Yorkshire, and the James thta apears on censuses after the 1841 was apparently bron in 1849, so he should be 2 in 1851.

Carrie,

I fear you may be right ................ but I'm really hoping not!

I have seen those deaths, but I was hoping to find the 1851 census to see whether Benjamin was still alive! I guess I will have to bite the bullet and send off for both those certificates!

I know!

you can see why I'm going round in circles!!

I think James b. 1839 on the 1841 census died, BUT I only found the birth registration for James born 1849 today on Lancashire bmd .................. James Schofield mmn Ashton, which is the same as Samuel and Joshua.

I cannot find William's birth, so assume it was before September 1837. Nor can I find a James b. ca 1839 mmn Ashton.

Nor can I find a marriage of Schofield/Ashton upto and including 1861.

Hi ozi,

I've just looked at that William Schofield, at least I think I have found the one you are referring to.

As I read it, there are 2 William Schofields in the household headed by Joseph and Sarah Schofield.

1. William Schofield b ca 1837, is their son

2. William Schofield b. ca 1850 is their grandson, son of parents Thomas and Mary Schofield.

don't think he's mine!

thank you

SylviaInCanada Report 2 Oct 2007 00:56

Hi Carrie,

I had a look at that damaged page.

I think Shero is actually ------head, and he is a Police Constable. Don't think mine was ever that!

The surnames on the rest of the page seemed quite clear, and none of them resembled Schofield.

Charles Report 2 Oct 2007 07:41

hi sylvia as mentioned before this is probrably a transcription error try a different spelling [drop the o ] if that doesent work [drop the e in field]so you are looking at schfeld and schofeld i had the same problem with a family and found them under a different spelling and of course all the family were the same as a previouse census but ten years older it is allso possible to see the actual census in the county library???

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 2 Oct 2007 15:43

Charles,

I have tried literally everything that I can think of over the last 3 to 4 years!

I found my ggrandfather on a later census as Silufield, and almost always begin by searching for Schof*, then I got to christian name only.

The search for ggggrandfather included finally dropping ALL names and just entering birth year and county, and scrolling through hundreds of results!

Nothing turned up that fits any kind of mistranscription of Schofield. Nada!

I'm wondering whether in fact they may have been "given" another name by the census taker, or whoever reported the names of inhabitants of a house ..... but that means looking at the actual image of literally thousands and thousands of names.

I live in Canada so it is a little difficult for me to get to the UK libraries etc. But the images are available on the internet on ancestry and some other sites, and I do always check the image for everyone I'm looking for.

Thanks for your suggestions.
