I think the only way is to try and get one of the other childrens birth certs and see if its clearer-sorry

This is a good one isn't it?

At the risk of disagreeing with previous suggestions ... might the first letter be B? I'm looking at the capital letters P and R and thinking that if the very bottom loop of the B has been cut off ... Then it might be Bro[dg][er] ??

Not totally happy about the d in the middle though. Could it be a mangled o and the last letter(s) a mangled k? That might be Brook. ??

Hi Barry,

Good morning. Just woken up to find you've been hard at work.

I have looked at the marriage you mention some time ago. There was also a marriage for Bingle/Pringle. St Bees.

The problem I face is that the writing on cert isn't original script. Whoever traced over the name only formed the general shape of the name and not the actual letters. So, Burridge could be right, although it looks more like Bridge. The length of the name only indicates only six letters.

Here's the source for the 1851. They've been mis-transcribed.

Class: HO107; Piece: 2177; Folio: 144; Page: 36; GSU roll: 87172-87174.

Hi all,

Thanks everyone for giving me so much of your time. I'm fairly satisfied that we're as close to solving this problem as we'll ever be.

Just a quick run-down.

First letter B. Most of you leant towards a B rather than my first impression of P.

Second letter R.

Third either I or O.

Forth and fifth DG.

And final letter E.


So that gives us either Bridge or Brodge.

I didn't realise that I would get so many offers of help. In fact, I was inundated with well over 20 offers.
