Thank you so much Clover- that is absolutely marvelous! First entry is spot on my family. I have his complete Army record and nowhere does it say he ever went to Ireland!

Thank you so much for that, and thanks to everyone. With a long lost Auntie like this there was always the hope that she had survived and married and had children, and I had lots of unknown cousins to find out there but of course this was always the most likely explanation.

Case closed.

I looked at Rootsireland.ie which contains one and a half million death records from all over Ireland.
There is not a single Winterton death on this site

NB: this site provides transcribed records @ 3.50 euros each.
Like all transcribed records they can contain errors.

Mick - I'm aware that there are many places in the UK where you could be sitting such that almost all the UK was "overseas" - Lerwick, Kirkwall, Lindesfarne, Sheerness, Hayling, Cowes, Holyhead, Biggar, Rothesay, Tobermory to name but a handful. However, this isn't the sense that the GRO uses "overseas", nor most people either, I would think.

I'll give you a hint.

I'm sitting about 10,000 miles south of the UK.
