I have the names of my great nans siblings but I would like to find the names of my great nans mum and dad. My great nan was called Mary Williams and she married my great grandad Robert Mossman. Mary had siblings called Isabella (known as Bella), Charlotte (known as Lottey), Nellie, Milly, Mary (my great nan), Thomas. Marys parents also adopted a boy called Stan when he was 2. They lived in John Williamson street, south shields. I would like to try and find each of them, when they were all born and also the name of their parents and possibly the year they were born. I know my great nan mary was born in 1912.

Can anyone help?

I have been having a look for ages now and I am just not grasping this at all. Can anyone else see if they can have better luck than me.

Was Mary Williams born in South Shields? If so this is the only birth for a Mary Williams registered in 1912:-

Mary A. M. Williams, mother's maiden name Trotter
Sept. qtr. 1912, South Shields, 10a, 1750

Could this be her? Are any of her brothers or sisters younger than her because if they are we could check their birth reference and see if the mother's maiden name is the same as this one.

UPDATE - this may be her as in the marriage index she gives her name as Mary A. Williams (perhaps she just dropped off the second middle initial). The marriage if you haven't got it is:-

Robert Mossman to Mary A. Williams
Dec. qtr. 1932, South Shields, 10a, 1555

Hi Melanie,

I was meaning Mary's siblings (brothers and sisters), not her chidren. I think in your original post you said that Nellie was one of Mary and Robert's children.

I have just realised, I said in my first post that mary and robert had together, I am so sorry, I meant to say, that all the names above are marys siblings

UPDATE, I have just updated the first post to show the correct information.

Do you happen to know which one was born after Mary in 1912 (or do you know what year any of them apart from Mary was born) - it's just that there are so many Williams births that if you don't have an idea of what years they were born it is a lot of trawling through pages and pages of births.

I know Nellie was the next one born after Mary and she was the younest, mary was the second youngest. I would say Nellie would have been within a couple of years, I dont think there was much difference in their age

Sorry to keep asking questions, but do you know if Nellie would have been named Nellie or could it be Ellen (Nellie is often a pet name for Ellen or Helen).

doddsy1 Report 28 Oct 2007 18:39

Could Nellie have been called Helen (1913) South Shields. Mothers maiden name also Trotter
The only marriage that I can find between Williamson and Trotter is in 1894 at South Shields when Matthew Williams married Margaret Trotter
What do you think?

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 28 Oct 2007 18:43

Well done Seaham Lass. I couldn't find a birth in the next couple of years after Mary for a Nellie, so I would think Helen is probably the one.

The full birth index is:-

Helen B. Williams, mmn Trotter
Dec. qtr. 1913, South Shields, 10a, 1720

KathleenBell Report 28 Oct 2007 18:56

Melanie,

There are Trotter's living with them at the time in 1901. The Isabella on the census may have died and another daughter born at a later date (1907 as found by Seaham Lass) named after her. None of the other siblings would have been born at the time of the 1901 census.

There is this death on Ancestry that is a possible:-

Name: Ruby Isabella Williams
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1900
Year of Registration: 1901
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at Death: 1
District: South Shields
County: Durham, Tyne and Wear
