Hello all,

I wonder if there is anyone out there who could help me - I am trying to locate a marriage for Charles Lane and Caroline (? I have her maiden name on my ggrandfathers birth certificate but it's hard to decipher, it looks like Head, Heed or Hunt, but could possibly be Fleet).

Both Charles and Caroline were born in Cranborne, Wimborne, Dorset around 1825-30. I have found them on the 1851 census with no children and also found them on the '71 census where their eldest child is aged 20, so I'm assuming they would have married sometime around 1850/51.

I have searched the IGI and have found no record and I'm really not sure where else to look, or how to determine Caroline's maiden name. Any light shed on the subject would be much appreciated.

Many thanks, Michelle

Julie

This is probably the married, but there is a female missing...which could be Caroline

Michelle,

You are better using FreeBMD for marriages after 1837.

Can't find a marrige for Charles lane and a Caroline in Dorset from 1843 to 1851.

Thanks all for your help. I see what you mean, Julie, one wife short - curious.

And thanks Reg for that, your census lookup's given me pause for thought, it's completely thrown my estimated ages! That's great that you found Emma Lane, doesn't look much like Still on my certificate but that must be the one - thank you.

Ah, thanks Julie for checking that!

That was a problem solved quickly enough!

I know that the FRC has closed at the moment, do you know if I can still obtain a certificate with that reference?

Couldn't find the marriage of Charles & Caroline on BVRI but there are christenings of 7 children of that couple in Cranborne, Dorset. Not one of them gives Caroline's maiden name though.

Sorry Reg - just reread the top of your message about the ages mistranscribed. I was so excited to get so much info back so quickly that I missed that - that's better, that makes more sense!

You can order the cert on line at www.gro.gov.uk/

I expect the reason that Caroline is missing is because that page hasn't been transcribed yet. That year is only 97% complete on FreeBMD but it looks as if another update is due so could be in that.

It's certainly feasible that Steel could look like Fleet on the cert in your possession.........

There's a christening of Charles Lane on BVRI, 10 Aug.1828, Cranborne, Dorset with parents Charles Lane & Hannah.

That looks like it could be my Charles Lane Margaret, thank you so much! I had no idea who his parents were so that gives me another line. What is the BVRI? Is that a cd or online?

Thank you all of you - I can't believe how much I've just found out from you all in the last hour! I really am very excited!

Unfortunately I'm having to tear myself away just now as hubbie will be home with no dinner cooked!!

Thanks again though to everyone.
