I can't find an Amie Mean on the the following censuses, or an Amey Die which was another possible marriage from the IGI. There is an unmarried Amey Webb in Stableford in 1851 with a father William, but she was born in 1806 and her place of birth is given as stableford, plus of course, I found the possible burial in Bourn, so I don't think this is them

The birth certificate will tell you the father's name, if there is no name then the child was illegitimate.
UNFORTUNATELY, registration of bmds only started in September 1837, and your two were both born before then. So there are no birth certificates for your to obtain.
You are going to have to try to find the parish records to see what it says in there.
Unfortunately, again!, the information on the IGI on family search is not always to be trusted, especially if it is a SUBMITTED record. An EXTRACTED record will have been taken (extracted) from the actual record, and thus is as trustworthy as anything else on the web!
It is not at all unusual to find that bride and/or groom invented a "father" for the marriage certificate, so that is no PROOF that they did indeed have a father.

Hello
Based on what you said about the name John not possibly being the father of William, I searched for a marriage of Amie. I found on the family search site an Amey Webb marrying a John Mean 18/12/1830. The marriage however is in Ickleton, I don't think it's close to Bourn, though Amey could have wanted to move away. Is there any way you know of finding out for certain if John was the father ? Would purchasing the birth certificate or marriage certificate for William be of any help to me?

I assume that this is the baptism for the mother of William and John
IGI Individual Record FamilySearchâ„¢ International Genealogical Index v5.0
AMIE WEBBE Pedigree Female Event(s): Birth: Christening: 28 FEB 1802 Bourn, Cambridge, England Parents: Father: WILLIAM WEBBE Family Mother: ELIZABETH
WILLIAM WEBB Pedigree Male Event(s): Birth: Christening: 01 SEP 1822 Bourn, Cambridge, England Parents: Mother: AMEY WEBB Family
JOHN WEBB Pedigree Male Event(s): Birth: Christening: 27 APR 1825 Bourn, Cambridge, England Parents: Mother: AMEY WEBB
If Amey was the mother of these two boys, I assume they were both illegitimate. I don't understand where you found the fathers name. If it was just written on the marriage certificate for one of the boys, I think that it was fairly common for them to invent a name to put on the form to cover the shame of being illegitimate. Or if Amey eventually married, it could have been the first name of their step father.

Very puzzling!!!! The only info I have on John b:abt 1798 is that he is the father of William and John. I came across John senior on Family Search.org when looking for William and johns parents. I found on the Cambs history site and family search that they were both born father not known but mother as illeg to Amey. I found that John was the father in Williams marriage to Sarah Fairey 16 nov 1840 Bourn Cambs. I thought by looking at the earliest possible census I would be able to finf more about John senior.
Would you be able to find him with these extra details given.

There is this one, but on the later censuses there are other possibilities. Can you post a census which you do have him on, so that we can get more details to look back

If anyone has access to the 1841 census could you please see if you can look up a John Webb born around 1798 in Cambridgeshire.
John had 2 sons William b:1822 and John b:1825 who both married and lived in Bourn Cambridgeshire.
Hope this is enough information Regards Marie
