Edith was 43 on her marriage cert. (7 Dec 1940) and a spinster. Her father John Smith was deceased, but his occupation is listed as general labourer.

What details does the marriage cert give for Edith and her father?

Spinster?
Age?
Father's occupation?

When you get the chance to check the marriage cert........make a note of the father's occupation then ask again for a 1901 lookup.

Hi Reggie,

I could be wrong on the mother's name! I left the copies of the certs at my parents at the weekend. So I could be completely barking up the wrong tree with this one.

I've never known an English marriage cert to give the bride's mother's name.

The names and occupations of the fathers of each of the couple are recorded..........

I'm back to this one again! I have now received the marriage cert and death cert for Edith May. Her marriage cert gives her father as John Smith and her mother as Ada.

I have found a listing on the 1901 census for a likely couple, both born in Crowborough, John C.1869 and Ada C.1873. Edith, if it is the right person, is listed as Edie, and is aged 3 - seems to fit so far!

My problem lies in not being able to find a birth recorded for Edie / Edith or a marriage between John and Ada.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Simon

No problem. It was fortunate the family seemed to stay in the same area otherwise it could have been hard to locate them.

Thanks Pete,

That looks like it could be Kathy - I'll get hold of the birth cert to check.

Thanks again for all of your help. It has been really useful and appreciated.

All the best,

Thanks Shirley,

Are there any details of the birth of a Cathy (Catherine?) Scott, Mother's maiden name Peerless, born, I believe sometime after 1913? The father was Isaac Scott?

Thanks,

Simon

Simon,

You need to read my last posting. Elizabeth's death reference is shown.

Her age at time of death is 50 yrs, so this is her birth ref (from FreeBMD)

Thanks again to everyone who has taken the time to look up information for me. I have ordered a copy of the marriage certificate and death certificate for Edith May. Hopefully this will fill in a few more gaps!

Now I'm just looking for the death of Elizabeth Kate Scott (nee Peerless) sometime between 1920 and 1940?! and also the date of birth of her and Isaacs daughter Cathy (Catherine?) I think she was born after 1913?

Thanks again,

Simon

Just to say that I have looked at the indexs from 1914 up to, and including 1920, for the death of Elizabeth K Scott (ms Peerless) and havent seen any likely ones.

Just to save anyone else the trouble.

There is a corresponding entry for Edith M SMITH

That marriage certificate will hopefully give you the clues to move further back.

Isaac Scott married Elizabeth Peerless in 1911

There are two children shown on FreeBMD

Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page

Births Jun 1912 (>99%)
Scott Arthur D Peerless Uckfield 2b 199

Births Dec 1913 (95%)
Scott Reginald P Peerless Uckfield 2b 186

So Elizabeth died sometime after 1913 and Isaac we assume, remarried sometime in the next 30 years. That's a wide span to check!
