Sadly, it seems she didn't survive to 1984. I searched the database for

Dora Tonkin
dob 6 Jan 1898

and there is no matching entry.

There are two Doras born on that date, but neither matches up otherwise --

Deborah Dora Cohen 6 Jan 1898 Dec 1985 87 Westminster

Edith Dora Wimpory 6 Jan 1898 Jul 1988 90 Watford

Quite a number of Tonkins born in 1898 and thereabouts did die in Cornwall, but none with that birth date. Nothing under Martin, either.

Sorry about that. A quarter by quarter search of the GRO index should turn up her death -- although I'd probably start by looking for a remarriage. Dora Tonkin, what she would presumably have remarried as, should be unusual enough that if you found it you could be fairly confident it was her.

Do you know what her siblings did, e.g. whom the girls married? It's probably unlikely that their descendants today would know anything of their parents' sister Dora. But if you have any other DOBs, for her siblings, I could do a quick search for them too. Since they were mostly older than her, the chances seem slim of finding them that way, though.

If you think of anything else that might be done, shout!

Otherwise, take a short subscription at Ancestry and start reading through those pages. It really isn't a huge undertaking, a few hours' work maybe to cover all the ground. If you found a remarriage you'd know what name to be looking for, and either way you could look for a death and then maybe learn something from the death certificate.

Kathryn, that would be brilliant. Dora Martin daughter of Edwin Martin & Mary Sarah Martin was born on the 6th January 1898 at Station Rd St Blazey.

If you are able to help it would be fantastic.

Do you have her exact date of birth? If she survived to 1984, it would be relatively easy to find a record of her death, since that database is searchable by first name and date of birth, and it might be possible to find an obvious candidate from the location, e.g. That would give you a surname, in the event that she remarried.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate of Dora Martin to Sidney Tonkin 5c 34 being correct. That had a son (My father) Aubrey born 31st May 1921 who died in 1971 Sidney left for America never to return in 1923ish never to return & re married in USA, my father was taken into care & adopted under the name of Wortley. I would love to know what happened to my grandmother Dora.

Nope, looks like those aren't her kids -- she married in 1919 (not quite clear from your post):

Marriages Mar 1919
Goodman Colin A [MH]etherell Launceston 5c 34
Martin Dora Tonkin Launceston 5c 34
Metherall Margaret A Goodman Launceston 5c 34
TONKIN Sidney G Martin Launceston 5c 34

Unless they were having kids long before getting married!

No births to that couple yet transcribed, it seems.

Do you think these might be her children?

All found on a very simple and quick and free search at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

for births with surname Tonkin, mother's surname Martin:

Births Jun 1912
Tonkin Thomas M Martin Penzance 5c 388
Births Jun 1914
TONKIN Susan Martin Penzance 5c 385
Births Mar 1916
Tonkin Simon J Martin Penzance 5c 339
Births Dec 1917
Tonkin Gracie D Martin Penzance 5c 278
Births Dec 1919
Tonkin John H Martin Penzance 5c 349

or is that what you already know?

You say you're looking for your grandmother -- since she is certainly deceased today, is it ancestors or descendants you're looking for?

You can search at FreeBMD for the marriages of her siblings too, if that info will help.
