Hi Lyndsay,

It would be best to order the marriage cert first. This will give the name and occupation of James' father. It will also give you James' age in 1935.

You can then trace back to his birth year and search for a birth ref.

I also live in Aus and order certs on-line through the GRO.

Good luck,

James W Robson (Heaton) was my grandfather yes. But he had to change his name during the war (well this is what my dad was told).

Dad's two sisters were born pre-war and were born as Robson's as far as we were told. Dad was born after and born as a Heaton.

I can only go on the info that I was told and as I live in Australia it is really difficult to get anything further. If I could find a record of my grandfather's birth it would be great. It might help solve an issue or two.

I've cross-checked the marriage ref and Marion Fretwell married James W Heaton. Is this your grandfather?

I bought some credits and have been using them to scour the martriage records looking for Fretwell marriages. I found one that appears to be my grandparents however it has the marriage as being between Marion Fretwell and Heaton in Hexham in 1935. My grandfather didn't beome a Heaton until a name change during the war.

So my question is:

Are these records collated from other data? Or why else would they have a marriage listed between two names, one of which wasn't correct at that time?
