Hi Valerie: The age is in the right range. This could be him. I wish I knew more about him. I will check on your library. Thanks for the help. regards Joy

Hi Kathryn: I don't know when or where John May went in Aussie. I have him in the 1881 census. I don't know if he married or not. He was on his way back to England when he must have been in his 80's and he died on his way back. This must have been in the 1940's. regards Joy

Hi Joy, The 'Victoria State Library' has an 'Ask a Librarian' service (query form on-line) -they will check their records - including electoral rolls and death records. (don't think they have shipping records.) ... ...Australian RAOK (on-line) may help check the Fiche 517 Page 008 at Vic PRO (which has to be done in person). -Valerie

Hi Joy, Do you have any idea when he would've come to Aus.? Do you think he came alone? Any idea as to his occupation? (unfortunately it's such a common name) -Valerie

Phew, not invisible!

Do you have any notion where he went in Australia?

Hopefully Valerie or one of the others on down under time will take another look at it and have some ideas.

Hi Kathryn: Im so sorry to have missed your message. I am always grateful for any help I can get. I didn't find John in the 61 census but I found most of the family living in Pancras London, England in 1871. Again I am truly sorry I guess I was interupted in my study by a call from my daughter and then was off to bed. regards Joy

Hi May (JOY). Chopped liver here checking in. I tried and failed, I guess. Oh well. No points for trying, it seems.

No John May in the 1861 or 1871 census who seems to match that one. None in the NSW deaths either (NSW deaths list parents' given names). Just in case my posts aren't actually invisible.

It would seem this has to be him:

Name: John May
Year of Registration: 1860
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Wycombe
County: Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire
Volume: 3a
Page: 379

The only one who looks like in 1861:

Name: John May
Age: 6 Mo
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860
Relation: Son
Father's Name: James
Mother's Name: Loice
Gender: Male
Where born: Shalstone, Buckinghamshire, England

Civil Parish: Shalstone
County/Island: Buckinghamshire
Country: England
Registration district: Buckingham
Sub-registration district: Leckhampstead

Mother "Loice", very helpful. Image says: ... well, I'd say Joice.

Marriages Mar 1842
Gaskin Mary Buckingham 6 415
HORNE George Buckingham 6 415
** MAY James Buckingham 6 415
MAY Martha Buckingham 6 415
TEW John Buckingham 6 415
** TEW Joice Buckingham 6 415

And a big family wedding it was!

But I could be all wet, and that could be some other John May. ;)

Nobody matches in NSW*, which is about the extent of my capabilities.
* unless parents = unknown
