I have been trying for many times to trace any sign of my great grandfather Charles Steel.

The information I have is;
Charles David Steel (dob 2nd April 1911)- eldest son of Charles Steel (my great grandfather) and Rose Linda Simmons. Rank / Profession of Charles is a Market Porter. Address: 30 Court 4 Barford Street, Birmingham.

Marriage of Great grandfather to Rose Linda Simmons was 6th july 1903 @ St Aidans Church, Aston, Birmingham.
Profession of GGF: Carter
Address: 11 back of 11 Bolton Road, Birmingham
Charles father: also Charles Steel (deceased) prof Carter
Rose's father: George Simmons (deceased) prof: Painter.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get any further back than this. Can anyone help

There is this Charles Steel in Warwickshire in the 1891 census who has a father called Charles. He is also about the right age to be marrying in 1903:-

Sorry for not replying sooner, the ages of Charles was 21 and Rose Linda 20. Making them born around 1882 and 1883.

Thanks for having a try but unfortunately Charles b c1882's fathers name is supposedly Charles again. You can see why I can't get any further....

The annoying thing is we don't know where he was born and if indeed it was Birmingham or whether they moved there to work in the markets both father and son.

There is this family in 1891, the father's occupation is a cab driver (which could easily be a carter)

this is the same Charles in 1901, but I can not work out occupation although it does look like something to do with Market or Marker.

You can see why I am getting so frustrating as I can't get past this hurdle to go back any further... aarrgh.

It has certainly made me think about the 'e' on the end of steel and other alternatives. Guess its back to the drawing board. It would be nice to try and find something out about the Simmons or they might prove to be just as hard.
