My gt gt grandfather James Smith married a lady called Jane ( I have not got her maiden name). Their eldest child was born about 1841 in Kensington Middlesex so i am assuming they wed about 1840 in that area. How would i go about finding their marriage certificate?

You would be taking a gamble if you didn't know Jane's surname and might easily follow the wrong line.

Buy a copy of one of their children's birth certificates to find her maiden name.

Go to http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

and put James Smith into search box from Sept 1837 to 1841 Kensington, and it will bring up a page with all the marriages on it. There is a James Smith and a Jane. Then you have to order the cert from GRO (£7)

James Smith Dec 1841 Kensington vol 3 page 252 on the same page is a Jane Page

Being such a common name, I would go with the child's birth certificate first to be sure of the mother's maiden name. There may be other James Smith/Jane marriages on the complete marriage index which are not on FreeBMD which is not complete.

I agree with Kathleen and Gwyn, a Birth cert would definately give you the maiden name to be sure you then get the right marriage certificate
