Prob is their son my gt grandfather was John Smith year of birth c. 1851 Fulham Middlesex, just as difficult as name so common. Why couldnt he have been called Zachary, Tarquin or Adolf anything but John!!! |

I agree with Kathleen and Gwyn, a Birth cert would definately give you the maiden name to be sure you then get the right marriage certificate |

Being such a common name, I would go with the child's birth certificate first to be sure of the mother's maiden name. There may be other James Smith/Jane marriages on the complete marriage index which are not on FreeBMD which is not complete. |

You would be taking a gamble if you didn't know Jane's surname and might easily follow the wrong line. |

My gt gt grandfather James Smith married a lady called Jane ( I have not got her maiden name). Their eldest child was born about 1841 in Kensington Middlesex so i am assuming they wed about 1840 in that area. How would i go about finding their marriage certificate? |
