I also have O'Neill. Mine moved over from Ireland, dropping the 2nd L on the way. Later they couldn't get work so they dropped the O from the name. This if why I wonder if this could be your Mary.

Looked for Thomas but not found birth here so probably born in Ireland.
There is a Thomas Oneil in 1881 in the Military in Plymouth on census.
Think this is likely to be him but age is a bit out, he appears to have lost a few years?

There is this birth for James Oneil which looks right?
If you were to get this and it proves to be son of Owen & Ellen from 1861 census where Owen appears to be down as Hall?
Then it suggests the other children should also be registered?

Would account for her absence on next census.
Only way to be sure is to order the certificate of course.

No, I have not checked births for them, just looked for deaths in between census times.
Will take a look though and see if I can see them?

Hi Janice,
Did you notice that there where no births for Catherine and Ellen in UK ? Even though it was stated in 1871 that they where all born in Plymouth, mind boggling !!
I suppose it was not compulsory as Reggie said.

Source Information:

Most of information looks good.
Need to check the missing children as they seem to disappear on next census, but so many young deaths back then.

If it is correct them Mary Ann was born in England.

Yes, I agree Reg
Cannot see Owen & Ellen together earlier than them next door to each other in 1881
in that area anyway?
Seen a Owen & Ellen earlier but not in that district.

Marilyn

Just to point out a couple of things..........

The children born in Ireland will not have birth info recorded in England.......you will need to access Irish records.

Mary Ann's birth (IF it was in England) may simply not have been registered.........it wasn't compulsory until 1875.

Did you find out from her marriage cert that she was Owen's daughter?

Reg

Janice

As we don't have the names (apart from Mary) we can't look for them.

We need more detail from Marilyn.........

Are you sure they came to England in 1860s?
Could they have been in another district before being in Devon?
