Carol, Im sorry but its very difficult to read the above message with no capitals, punctuation, etc.

You want to know how far electoral rolls go back to find your gran? Women werent allowed to vote til about 1919 so your gran wouldnt be on an electoral roll before that.

You need to rewrite your message to say who you are looking for as "granma miller" will mean nothing to the rest of us. Are you saying that you cant find her birth certificate?

What is your grandmothers name and when did she marry and who did she marry and how old was she when she married?

And where is Pegswood?

Are you say you have her marriage certificate and her maiden name is Snowdon? What is her fathers name and occupation on the marriage certificate?

NB, Just googled, Pegswood is Northumberland for anyone interested.

Heather Report 10 Dec 2007 10:36

Right, thank you.

Snowdon Miller is her father and her name is Ellen Miller and she was born about 1886.

But you dont say who she married and what was on the cert.

I take it Im right about Pegswood being in Northumberland?

Heather

Heather Report 10 Dec 2007 10:38

Well, this looks likely her fathers marriage - there cant be many people with that first name:

Name: Snowdon Miller
Year of Registration: 1880
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Newcastle Upon Tyne
County: Northumberland, Tyne and Wear
Volume: 10b
Page: 103 (

Slight problem on freebmd they seem to have included a Snowdon Miller twice for the quarter:

Heather

Heather Report 10 Dec 2007 10:45

Well, you can order Snowdons marriage certificate using the reference above - you dont need the wifes name to order it from GRO - just the groom will do - for £7.

If you want to have another search - check for one of the brides first names plus Miller on the 1881 census which is free to search on familysearch.org. But its likely with a name like that, he used another one! But you have a lead now - just buy the marriage cert above.

Have you tried freebmd? It may well be that the family could be in scotland at some census dates as they are so near the border.

Have you seen the above marriage for Snowdon?

There is also this marriage which I would consider is very likely his son or relative:

Name: James Snowdon Miller
Year of Registration: 1908
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Morpeth
County: Durham, Northumberland
Volume: 10b
Page: 773

Get the marriage cert for Snowdon - then you can work from that information.

Heather

Heather Report 10 Dec 2007 11:24

Get Snowdons marriage cert as above in 1880 and you can work from there. I would have thought a man with that name would very likely choose to use another one for every day.

But get the marriage cert!!

Hi guys - Carol called me out on this one in a "success" post but I hadn't seen it, so I missed out on the fun.

Just re the duplicate listing for the Snowdon Miller marriage at FreeBMD -- one's an error, and they haven't done the "resolution" phase yet where they delete all the wrong transcriptions, so the wrong one is still sitting there with the right one.

I checked the images for both entries at Ancestry, where they tend to be clearer, and the correct page number is definitely 160.

So this is the info you need for ordering the cert, Carol:

Name: Snowdon Miller
Year of Registration: 1880
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Newcastle Upon Tyne
County: Northumberland, Tyne and Wear
Volume: 10b
Page: 160

And like Heather says, that's what you need to do! That will give you his wife's and father's names.
