My father in law was known to have had a previous wife before he married my mother in law in 1947. His name was Arthur Sidney Tansley born 1910 in Leicester. |

I've looked at 1926 to 1947 and can't find a marriage for Arthur Sidney Tansley, although there are quite a lot of marriages for the name Arthur without a middle initial. |

If you obtain the cert for the 'second' marriage, it will tell you his marital status at the time........assuming he didn't fib! |

Does your sister in law recall the name of the person who told her this? |

As you have already been advised, the second marriage certificate should give his status at the time. My father-in-law's second marriage also shows the name of his first wife in the Condition column, so you may find the same. |
