Well done Esther, it's a pain to have to trawl though isn't it?

I have been using Ancestry BMD to work my way forward from 1901 on many lines and it can become a chore.
Two other things that you should consider
- Looking at the CD's of Burials or finding a library that has a copy
- Joining the rootsweb mailing list for Notts and posting a query

Got him!!!!! Thank you both so much for the advice. I wasn't aware of the full index as well as the general search boxes.

He died in 1934 aged 65. I'm going to send for his certificate immediately. - I've been looking for months and months - wish I'd had the sense to ask on GR before then.

Esther you need to search the FULL death index.

First go to the main search screen on Ancestry.
Scroll down til you see Births Marriages & Deaths on the right & press this.
You should now have another seach box on your screen, scroll down a bit & you will find a second scroll bar,
Use the second scroll bar to find "England & Wales Death Index 1837-1983" NOT the one marked Free Index
Click on this then start you search.
You will have to search each 1/4 of each year manually.

As Reggie says, BMD's are only indexed to around 1920 so I usually start a search at 1915 just to be on the safe side.

As this is a very long job might be worth your while taking note of other deaths in the area with the same surname.

I've put his name into the death index 1837 etc

Advance search on all death records but to no avail. Looked for him under both derbyshire and nottinghamshire as county. I know he was alive upto 1914 ( my grandfather was born then and he had memories of him so must have lived a fair few years after that.)

Sorry I can't tell you more - I'm still trying to get to grips with the different research means available.

When you say 'Ancestry'.........presumably you mean the free records, which are only copies of the freebmd site..........

For anything after about 1920...you have to access the FULL records..........only available by paying for them..........either on Ancestry, or on findmypast

I'm really struggling to find out the date of my great grandfather's death - and i really want a copy of his death certificate. His name was William Thomas Guyler - born 1869 in Basford Nottingham (or derbyshire as registered then). He lived his whole life on Gawthorne street, New Basford Nottingham. Married Mary Elsey in 1911. Either Mary or William died in Mapperely asylum but the family aren't sure which one of them.

Pretty sure he had died before 1937 but that is all I have and it is driving me mad.

Can anyone help - please!!!
Esther
